The absolute best thing you can do is to buy an indoor kennel - it gives them somewhere that is their 'bedroom' which they will not toilet in (it also protects from them chewing your house!). You also need to very quickly make the association between going outside and going to the toilet - take them out as often as necessary, when they wake up, when they've eaten, when there's any excitement and probably up to once an hour to start with. Let them have a mill around until they go to the toilet, it usually doesn't take very long, then praise them. If you catch your puppy in the act of peeing or pooing in the house, call their name - not to frighten them just to distract them, then run towards the back door trying to get them to follow you to the correct place. If you find a puddle and haven't seen them do it, you'll have to grin and bear it I'm afraid, punishment will do no good but may make them afraid to toilet in front of you. Don't use anything with bleach in to clean up accidents - it smells clean to us but like a toilet to them!! Good luck!

Immediately after playing, when he wakes up after sleeping and about 10-15 mins after eating or drinking take him out to the yard through the same door and preferably the same area in the yard every time. Once you're in the yard be patient. It may take him a little while before he realizes that's where he's to go. As he's doing as well as once he's done his business overly praise him.
Soon he will go to the door and let you know he needs to be let out.

Do not wait for him to start hunting in the house for a spot to go. It's too late then.

I also recommend crate training for when you're not home. Dogs will not go in the area they are to sleep. A crate needs to be just big enough for the dog to be able to turn around and that is all. Too much room allows the dog to go say in the back of the crate and he can comfortably lay in the front.

I have a golden retriever and didn't want to spent a lot of money buying different sized crates. I bought a large sized crate and used a piece of cardboard and fit it accordingly. I could then move it as my dog grew. My dog was trained within a couple weeks but I kept the cardboard in there until he was big enough for the crate.

Obviously with a Welsh terrier you could probably get away with a smaller crate and be ok.

Take pup outside frequently, every hour, after eating, sleeping, drinking. When pup toilets outside give LOTS of praise and a treat- make toileting outside as great a thing as poss. (you can say a word when they are doing it to train to 'go' on request). they will soon learn that toileting out side is great and inside no fun at all. It will take time (up to a year) for he/she to learn how to 'ask' to go out,you need to look for signs, sniffing the ground a lot, or hiding or circling can mean they need to go. PLEASE bear in mind they have no control of their bladder (ie don't know when they need to go) until they are 14weeks old (and sometimes later). Any accidents in side should be ignored (you have either missed the signs or not taken out soon enough). Be patient, it take time to learn your dogs individual ways of asking. Any accidents should be cleaned with bio washing powder solution-then dry and then put surgical spirit (or other alcohol) then rinse and dry.- normal antibac cleaners have the same chemicals as pee and poo so may make them want to mark there again. Good luck and see your vet/vet nurse for more advice if you need it!

A well-trained dog makes everyone happy, including his owner. Take a little time training him, and you'll never regret it; you'll always have an obedient dog by your side. Find more https://tr.im/Dfcir

By their nature, dogs are pack animals with a well-defined social order. Through basic training, you need to consistently make sure your puppy understands that you are the leader, not him. So in teaching him the basic rules, you take on the role of pack leader.

To fit into the family circle, your dog must be taught to recognize his name and such commands as come, heel, lie down and sit.

well we've been through a few puppies over the years (no we're not bad people but they don't tend to go beyond 16!)

I grew up with the rub their nose in it tactic BUT......more recently the local vet and now the uni I study are at are telling me differently (I'm studying horses so the training methods are often the same and yes also very different)

basically you have to watch like a hawk for when the little westie decides he/she wants to relieve themselves, whip them asap out to a decided spot outside and praise praise praise for peeing or what-not out there, the idea being that they will learn to associate with toileting in that spot with good things - animals react better to renforcement of good behaviour as opposed to punishing bad

if you are in a situation that going outside feels too difficult and soon you could try the idea of the piece of newspaper that you gradually move outside but in a way I think you are only creating more work for yourself

the main thing here is consistancy and that means watching the little blighter all day and reacting only to when they do what you need them to do, you can react in a firm way if you catch them in the act but don't ever attempt to reprimand the animal for something they have already done as they don't know to associate your punishment with toileting

ok hope that helps
ps it does work but it'll take a few months to be habit

Research "Crate Training" on Yahoo. It is the best, most effective way to train your dog. Potty train, good chewing habits and obedience. Check it out. I have always had a dog in my life since I was born, and that is exactly how we have always trained our puppy. Trust me it works! Don't use a litter box, or puppy pads you see in the stores. Only teaches them to go potty on the floor and not outside! Crate trainging is effective because a dog will NOT go potty in its bed. Teaches them to hold it. But you MUST be consistent and take them out every two hours and extend the time as they get older. The pup may whine in the beginning only because its not used to the crate and is having seperation anxiety. Never give in to your pup's whining, only teaches them that that is how they get your attention. Good luck!!!
