Advantages for birth mom- Still have a part in the child's life and there is no wondering what happened to the baby or trying to find him/her years later.

Disadvantages- Possible regret of the decision?

Advantages to the adoptive parents- 1) The kid knows early on that they have been adopted so there is no dilemma where someone has to tell them they've been adopted. They've known from day one. 2) Knowing the wonderful selfless person who gave you the gift of a child 3) Knowing the birthmom really helps also because of family medical history...like what things your child is at risk for. 4) No surprising news down the road that the child wants to find their birth mom.

Advantage to child: 1) No mystery as to what their birth mother looked like or what she was like in general. 2) Feeling like the birth mom still really cares and wants to be a part of their life 3) Not having the great mystery as to where there birthmom is and ssearching for years for her.
4) More people who love them.

Disadvantages Of Open Adoption

We are currently in two open adoptions and neither of them are working out well. The first is 6 (almost 7) years old & she has been with us since she was 2. She was in foster care prior to us adopting her. Her parents contact us infrequently and she is very confused by this. The other is 6 and his sister is almost 4. Their parents were VERY involved at the beginning (again we adopted them from foster care) but more recently after mom had 3 more children she doesn't call very often or anything. We are seriously considering closing these adoptions for the sake of the children as I believe they are suffering.

This very idea has gone through legislation in my state, there are protection clauses in place too, its not just open for anyone wanting their birth certificate. Mainly for situations that involve a child who was fostered intially due to violence and needs protecting from further abuse, therefore that kind of information can't be released to the natural mother/father unless the adoptee themselves when they're 18 approve it.(Referring to the amended birth certificate) Because the way it works now she would have at least 6months to access the original before the adoption goes through if she wishes. The only thing that bothered me about the legislation is that we can't apply for the orginal until my child turns 18! But their natural mother can get access to all that information if she choses at any time. I couldn't understand how they would pass it if my child couldn't have it at the same time too in their childhood. Very confusing the way they did it, not taking my child's rights into account at all. I'm not against that kind of legislation, just needs to be more balanced.

It always seems to be about the adults. What would the advantages be to the baby? I would think not much since it could cause a lot of confusion. If you give the baby up and into a new life with 2 parents then let the child live without the turmoil. Move on and don't make the same mistake. But pat yourself on the back for giving that child a chance in life.

I can think of one pro for the mother carrying the baby, you are still in the child's life. Even through you can not be there all the time you still see your child grow up and know how they are doing.
