My 4 yr old dog sucks on the paws of this bear stuffed animal until they are all matted down flat. This is the 3rd stuffed animal he's been through, I threw the other 2 away after he wore through and the stuffing started to come out. He likes to lay on top of the bear while the bears paw is in his mouth and you can actually hear him sucking on it, like a baby sucking on a pacifier. He wasnt taken from his mother too early, he was 12 wks old when I got him. Why does he do this??

I'll bet you've never seen your dog happier than when he's sucking on that toy. My dog does the same thing,it's nothing to worry about,it's just something that helps soothe them. Some animals do it and some don't. Kinda like some grown folks that still suck their thumb (no i'm not admitting to anything)lol.

My puppy's dad does this. I've heard that dogs do this because they were taken away from their mothers too early. But her dad sucks on and bites the neck of the stuffed animals, and growls when the other dogs get close, so it could be a hunting instinct. Your vet may know better, but its very common, so its probably no big deal!

He does it for comfort, and it won't hurt him. You could buy a pacifier for dogs at a pet store, or, if you want him to stop completely, you could provide a different way for him to feel comforted. I suggest you just let him be though, unless it really becomes a problem.

My Jack Russell does that. I've noticed that he does it when he is upset. Some dogs just find if comforting. My boy has so many toys that are all matted down. I just wash them to keep them from being stinky and give them back to him. He can keep them until they just fall apart.

It's called "wool sucking." It's comforting to him. It's not harmful and it's not obscene. My old man cat still does this.

Maybe he misses the comfort of his mum's teat. Or he might be lonely.

I don't know much about this kind of thing, but I suspect that he'll probably grow out of it..... sometime.
