It really depends on where you get the tattoo. Places that are "boney" like ankles, fingers and shoulders can get very intense and painful because it IS a needle and it vibrates the bones. Places that are more "fatty" or muscles like the upper arm, stomach and certain places on the back are more bearable. Try this...take a sewing needle (or somethign sharp) and prick the area where you plan on putting the tattoo...(not hard enough to bleed). Or pinch the area and if it's sensitive to the pinching, they chances are it'll be sensitive to the tattooing procedure. This will give you an idea of how much you can handle. I think the most painful places for me were the front of my neck, the inside of my arm, the back of my thigh and the top of my foot. These were beyond a stinging or itching, they just plain hurt.
Everyone has a different threshhold for pain, so it's hard for anyone to say it doesn't hurt that bad. Good luck, and make sure that you are inked with something you can live with forever!

Well, everyone is different but I have 3 tattoos, two butterflies on outside shoulder (kind of hurt a little on the bone) and the worst, was my ankle and foot. My friend and I got almost matching anklets with a sun face and it looks like a anklet, with stars and sunburts and lots and lots of detail! Also with japanese friendship letters on the very back of my ankel, Mine hurt so bad! I made it through with holding her hand and about taking it off! LOL. I broke out in a sweat and then the chills, and I have a high Pain tolerance!!! I love tattoos, but NEVER again on my foot and lower ankle! I picked the worst spot to put it! I am 43 and had my first at 40. I was sure of what I wanted! I just suggest you think about what you like and go for it and enjoy it. Its not so bad you wont handle the pain! My tattoos are done with a meaning and also I can say < NOOne in the world can have one like mine becasue it was done custome and I like that, good luck hun!!!

Everyone wants to know this! I can tell you from personal experience that everyone will tell you something different.
It depends on your pain tolerance, where you are getting the tattoos and your nerves...
I have four tattoos (2 on my back, 2 on my hip) and I am terrified of needles!!! I think it didn't hurt, the feeling was more irrating like a persistant vibrating-slight stinging, everyonce in awhile it would sting a little more and make me want to jump but it wasn't unbearable. I even dozed off during 2 of them.
I asked the tattoo guy why it "hurt" sometimes and he said that it just depends on how sensative different parts of your skin are..everyone is different.
I wanted a tattoo on my foot and asked my friend who has full sleeves on both arms and a chest piece and work done on her back, she said the tattoo on her foot was by far the worst, it made her eyes water a bit, but someone else told me it was cake so who knows.
sorry this was so long, good luck!!

Unsterile tattooing equipment can transmit infections, including hepatitis B, hepatitis C and even HIV. The risk is so significant that the American Association of Blood Banks requires a one-year wait between getting a tattoo and donating blood.
You could also get granulomas, little nodules that can form around the tattoo, or keloid scar formation. Some people are prone to developing these keloid scars, which grow beyond the boundary of the tattoo. Granulomas and keloids are permanent unless you have them surgically removed.
Also, allergic reactions, although rare, can happen.
If you still want to get a tattoo... make sure they are using disposable equipment and the place is Clean!! visit their place of business, before making an appointment to have it done.

It might hurt a lil at first, but within 5-10 minutes, you will be fine. It is the biggest rush ever! I love the sound of a tattoo machine. Be warned: tattoos are extremely addictive. After my first one, I swore I wasnt getting anymore. I now have 3 more and the beginning of a full back piece.

Please make sure that the needle is new and should you get color, that the ink is poured into your own seperate dish.
My first one (my left wrist) was just a pinch. I really enjoyed it and it didn't hurt at all.
My second on (left ankle), I was clutching my friend's hand as hard as I could to keep out from screaming. It wasn't just a dull pain. Then the endorphins kick in, and it made it more tolerable.
The pain numbed quickly for me and only when my ankle was peeling did it bother me again. I think it was totally worth it though.
Good luck and have fun. Also, please make sure you are positive this is what you want.

I have 11 tattoos, and they all felt different to a degeree, depending on where I got them. I have them every where from a bat that coveres my whole chest to a sparrow on my foot (ouchie!!). For the most part it just feels hot, kinda lika a sunburn. Its not that bad. And as long as the tattoo means something to you its worth it!!

To know how a tat is going to feel depends on your level of pain and where your getting it. EVERY tat hurts doesn't matter where its being done (to some degree). I found the neck the most painful but to each their own.
Basically the more fat you have in the area the less it'll hurt and of course, the lease fat the more it'll hurt
Good luck

I have two tattoos, one on my right arm, and one on my back. Niether one of my tattoos hurt that bad. It only starts to hurt when they stay in one spot with the needle for a while. But other than that no, its not bad.
