Yes, it just doesn't seem "right" without them.
It's a southern thing, or at least that's what my Mom used to say.

My kids would not have eaten it if there were no chips!
Personally, I can do without them myself. Do what suits

sometimes but just on the top or they get soggy.
salt and vinegar is the best but plain works too!
