I have a jack russell mix and she does this as well. She also loves to chew wood and pieces of bark. At her last checkup at the vet I mentioned it and they said as long as it was what she's always done then don't worry about it but if she suddenly begins eating large amounts of grass or weeds then her digestive tract may be upset.

some dogs do it to relieve an upset stomach, but others do it because they need the nutrients. Several people told me that as my dog has always eaten leaves and grass. Just don't let him eat too much as he might get sick.

There are two reasons that a dog eats grass and foliage. One is that he has an upset stomach and needs to puke to feel better and the other is that he is lacking something in his diet. I am not sure what you are feeding him but my dogs did that and i switched them to NUTRO NATURAL CHOICE LAMB AND RICE and they stopped doing it unless they are feeling sick.

Dogs do this when they feel sick. It apparently settles the stomach. I think it has benefits if they eat something mildy poisonous to them (not lethal, just something that makes them feel a bit ill).
