bosha is mostly right. He's got the dialects right except Iraqi is not a shami dialect. I speak shami and I cirtainly don't always understand Iraqis. Iraqi is it's own dialect.

ignore that comment about farsi. It's not arabic at all. It's not even in the same language family. Arabic is a semetic language and farsi is indo-european. Hebrew is closer to arabic than farsi is.

The Coranic Arabic as written in the Coran
The Classical Arabic as spoken officially throughout the Arab world and understood by All - no exception-
The slangs (there are more than 600 slangs in the 22 different Arabic Countries) specific to countries and groups of people.

the arabic has 2 talking languages:one that everyone knows and the other is different from country to anthor like egypt has different accent comparing to lebanon.but they all write the same

Basicly it's either formal or informal.
however, there are many informal accents, almost each country has a different accent, but they are not that different from each other.
there is a new slang accent for text messaging and net chatting.
