I am a pet training instructor and a proud owner of a wonderful 11 years old cocker spaniel....I've always used positive reinforcement training methods with my dog and all of my clients. It works great, and it's also fun....Keys to success : consistency, patience and good timing. Take him to a puppy class at PetSmart, you're going to love it...

What are you trying to train your cocker to do???
Like anything training takes consistency, perserverance, tolerance, love and kindness. Ensure one word commands and follow up with lots of treats and/or praise (or clicker if you are using a clicker for training). Even if a dog only gets into a sit position for a second, reward....evenutally the dog will get it. Same thing goes for each new "item/thing" you teach your pup.
I would also suggest enrolling in an obedience class....socialization is key for dogs! And obedience training is more of us owners than it is for the dogs!

The same way you train any other dog. (lol) Ok, now that I've got that out of my system. Try clicker training, it works well with my dogs and my rescued dogs. I clicker train every dog I handle and it makes it soooooo much easier. One should never punish (hit, wack, withhold food or water) a dog. They do not really understand what is happening to them.

IF you mean potty training take them out at least 20 minutes after they eat first thing when they wake and right before you go to bed. Just watch if they start sniffing they want to go out. To train to do tricks use treats.

Train it to do what? Kennel training is a great way to house break a pup. Training it to do tricks takes patients agility training should be done when it is a little older.

If you are referring to house breaking, I suggest crate training.
If you are talking about basic commands, patience, treats, praise.

Be consistent; use one-word commands (and always the same one to mean the same thing); enforce or punish using a rolled-up newspaper on the backside.
