Keep in mind that I want something pretty, not wild. My skin tone is medium-brown.

Try a really dark brown if your hair is black. If it's already dark brown, go with a subtle deep red, maybe with some copper tones in it.

With black hair and medium brown skin, I think highlights in a caramel shade would be very flattering. My definition of caramel is a medium golden brown with just a hint of reddish tone. You don't want to go with a light blonde, as it wouldn't look natural. Also, you might keep in mind that highlights mean different things to different people. For example, some prefer just a hint of color that only shows up in the sun or bright lights. Others like a more obvious streaking that contrasts with their natural hair color. And still others like wide swatches of color intermingled with their own hair color. Decide which kind you like best if you're having it done professionally -- which I would recommend. If you do it yourself, be sure to read package directions carefully, or have a friend assist you. Good luck!
