I have a gym membership, but never go to the gym. I really get bored there, and am not in great shape, so I feel tired and out of breath easily. Is there a way to get motivated?

you need to get a friend to go with you, it makes it more fun

The easiest way to get motivated is find a gym buddy to go with.
If you are together with somebody and make a commitment to go to the gym every Tuesday and Thursday you will not want to let your buddy down so you show up there.

As for being bored: I never go on any of the machines (walking machines or bicycles, etc) but sign up for classes. Find classes you like (instructor, music, crowd are all important factors in what class you should attend). Don't shy away from weird classes like ball or kick-box and be aware that even though you are not in shape, other people will not look down on you. Everybody who is in the class was 'not in shape' when they started! If the crowd is hostile, go to another class or gym.

Remember that most people DON'T want to go at first, but they just make themselves do it (including me). You'll never get into shape if you dwell on not WANTING to go. Eventually, you'll feel strange if you don't go. Just keep with it. I started going to the gym 2 yrs ago, I weighed 155 lbs, and within 4 months, I lost 20 lbs, just by going to the gym 3 times a week.

How bad do you want to be in shape? If I can be so bold as to assume, you're probably not focused and working out a number of different muscle groups but nothing is really happening b/c your not doing enough reps or doing it correctly. Hire a personal trainer to find your rhythm and learn how to work out correctly, then after you know the drills. Do it on your own! Push it, for all that is worth.

In my experience, the best and only motivation has been just doing it. Not the most uplifting advice, I know. Consistency is the only exercise characteristic that will make any difference in your life, and with exercise, as with any activity in life, if you wait until you feel like it, it will never be a consistent part of your life.

I got a membership for Christmas and I haven't even activated the card, so when you find some motivation let me know.

It's a vicious circle as you know. Because you aren't working out, you're tired. But because you aren't working out, you're tired. Break the cycle and just do it. No excuse. Even if you are tired, do something. The next time it will be better.
