Start > Run > Type "msconfig" > go to the Startup tab and deselect all the programs you don't need.

for aol instant messenger, just right click on the guy in the bottom right corner of your screen. hit preferences. look on the tabs on the left, hit general, and uncheck "run AIM when windows starts"

within instant messenger itself under options there is a setting that says something like "start program when windows starts". you should always take those off

Go to Control Panel, Click on Taskbar and Start Menu. Go to Start menu and remove those programs you don't want to open automatically when you turn on your computer. Just highlight and remove. It doesn't actually remove the program, just the starting of it. You can start it yourself when you want to by going to Start, All Programs and clicking on it there.

msconfig is old school. These day you are better of with start>run>services.msc
Select start up type eg manual or disabled.
