When a person fills out the Postal Form 3575 the change of address is for 18 months in duration. The first year all first and second class mail will be forwarded free of charge, but the last six months the mail will be returned to sender. The yellow label will continue to show the sender the new address so that they may re-mail.
Check with your local Post Office for the latest changes. I retired in 1995 from the Postal Service, so changes to that rule might have been made. For the 14 years I had with USPS, I worked in the Computer Forwarding Service department, the same that enters your data and forwards your mail.

From USPS Website Quoted. "We file your address change with the USPS promptly, in about one business day. It takes the post office up to three business days to post your address change to their records. And it may take anywhere from 7-10 business days for your mail to start forwarding to your new address, per USPS guidelines."

3 to 5 working days actually; but if you do it online you have a better chance of getting it through; we sent one in on their card when we moved in May; discovered in late June the p.o. had LOST their own card! Had to redo online and PAY for the privilege! (in the meantime, my doctor's office had sent the bill to collections, instead of calling me at the phone number I gave them!)

Six months if you mean how long does it stay in effect. If you mean how long does it take for one to go into effect, probably a day or two.
