Well, he becomes a War President and with an ongoing war the executive office usually gets more 'emergency' powers. That's why war is so attractive to the warmongers who struggle to stay in office for second term or is looking for an excuse to stay longer in office.

As you can see from several answers presidents don't necessarily stay in office during a war. However there is another reason why many U S Presidents appear to be warmongers other than wishing to stay in office. You will find that those who create conflicts overseas (never in America is it?) probably have failing domestic policies and the wars tend to detract the public attention from these. Many U S presidents since WWII have been poor choices and even poorer leaders and, let's be fair, America doesn't 'go to war'. It invades, a completely different thing. Presidents have constantly backed away from 'real' conflicts when there have been potential war situations with Russia, North Korea and China and following revelations that the Kennedy assassination was probably planned by the very man that Robert Kennedy sent to Cuba to kill Castro we find that Lyndon B Johnson had this story suppressed. Thus Castro had his arch-enemy killed and Johnson was afraid to antagonise Cuba in case the Soviet Union, whom he feared immensely, became involved. Remember the missile crisis that Kennedy almost caused a war over? Johnson didn't want another of those.

The President does not stay President if there is a war. Historically people have been hesitant to change Presidents during the war but there is a 2 term limit now.

He doesn't stay President if there is a war. Even FDR had to win elections to stay President during WW II if he had lost those elections a new President would have taken over regardless of the war or not. Now if Bush becomes a dictator then he can stay in power as long as he's alive war or no war.

What Quatt 47 said! I believe this falls under a yet obscure Colin Powell doctrine, "You break it you bought it," e.g. the current President. I believe the American people wanted to give him an opportunity to resolve the "War on Terrorism." Not "Terror." Last time I check that was an emotion. Whether that will happen remains to be seen. None the less in about 2 years we'll have a new President whether we want 'em or not. There you have it, my 2 cents.

Not true we have changed Presidents several times during wars. Our 4 year terms mean they leave if not re-elected or have served two terms. The exception was WWII when Roosevelt was elected to 4 terms (the constitution was changed in 1946 to end this.)

In Korea we changed from Truman to Eisenhower. Vietnam it was Eisenhower to Kennedy to Johnson to Nixon (4 changes.)

Well, we've never fired a president yet because we were
embattled in a war. The president is Commander of the
Military (in case you didn't know that). Why would he want
more war when it is already so unpopular by wimps. You
all just love to make up stuff, don't you? All Americans
should be united on the side of America, not the enemy..no
wonder we can't seem to win. We gotta fight the enemy plus
all the American liberals.

What does being engaged in a war have to do with whether the President keeps his position?

Make sense.

ITs possible but not a given....just because there is a war on it does not mean he will stay....there are a lot of things that have to be done to make that happen. And it has to be a declared war...and if I recall right...this is not an offical war because only congress can actually declare a state of war....the pres. can order troops to do whatever but that does not mean congress had actually declared war.
