Some couples will get married within the same year they were engaged. Some prefer to be engaged and hold off marriage until obligations are fully met--such as school, careers or financial reasons or to sort things out.You do not have to be married right away.In fact, you could be engaged for 10+ years before you get married.Being with your future fiance/boyfriend is all worth while.
Good luck!
I was engaged for 4 years until I finally tied the knot this year

I'd say a year engagement is probably standard because of wedding planning. A lot of halls are booked up a year in advance, so if you want to get the day you want, you have to get it way ahead of time.

Tell him what you just said right here. that you love him and you want to marry him after you graduate that way he can know you only want to be with by wearing a ring and you can set a date up now even if it is 3 years away. 3 years goes by fast.

It depends on the couple. There is nothing wrong with a long engagement. In fact that gives you more time to figure things out!
