My mother taught me not to do this. What do you think? Should the mothers of other people tell their children the same thing?

I don't see anything wrong with chewing gum in private or public. There is a right and wrong way to chew though. If you can be desecrate and chew with your mouth closed go ahead and chew, but on the other hand if you must blow bubbles, snap your gum, or chew with your mouth open save it for home. My mother also tough me how to chew gum, not just when and where. The very most important thing to remember is to never spit gum on the sidewalk or any where else someone might step into it. I JUST HATE WHEN THAT HAPPENS!!!!!

I think gum is a nasty product. Chewing it after a meal to freshen breath and remove food particles is fine, I will sometimes chew a piece for no more than ten minutes. But under no cricumstance should you chew gum in public, at the office, during a phone (or face-to-face) conversation, or anywhere. It is so disgusting to see and hear. People really have no class these days.

In public, as long as you don't look like a camel, I guess it's ok. If chewing gum in public is should be disposed of properly, not just spit on the ground, because that makes a mess for the rest of us.

As on chewing gum on TV...NO WAY! That is so rude. This also applies to public situations like church, movies, etc. My husbands uncle chewed gum through our wedding, and I don't think he even realized it!! It's all I could see for like 5 minutes was his jaws smacking up and down. I make fun of him for it though, so I wasn't offended. It was really distracting though.

If you want to chew gum, who cares? I wouldn't do it at a job interview, but I may have it in my mouth to make sure my breath isn't terrible. Idon't think it is a big deal. There is a lot worse!!!!
And I don't think the people on the Price is Right practice etiquette!

It depends on where I am in public as to whether I chew or not, then I try to be polite about it. Never would I on the Price is Right. Hate to choke if the wheel landed on $1.00 or I won a brand new car, or the showcase.....(or all 3)

You can tell/teach your children "manners 101" till you are blue in the face, but if their friends weren't properly trained, they will do what they see their friends do!
To me, chewing gum in public can be acceptable as long as one's mouth is closed (visualize the cow chewing her cud) & they are not making popping noises. I wouldn't on television, but smoking, crevice digging or scratching, blowing one's nose at the table in a restruant, & public displays of affection take the front page in my book of public ettiquette annoyances...

Your mummy was probably right. I've done it once or twice but i always feel really really guilty about it, like I'm giving the world a bad view of myself. I think chewing gum publicly is a show off of plebian arrogance which I myself can't stand.

+ it messes up me french.

Ok there is nothing wrong with chewing gum in public

Public is fine, as long as you are not obscene about it (or chew with your mouth open). It is a bit bad-mannered to chew while on a forum like "Price is Right" where you are on stage with and audience. I would not do it because it is poor etiquette.
