I am doing a paper on Mary as one of my idols. Can you tell me what she means to you?

You would do better to think of the Blessed Mother as an example of how to live your life rather than an idol - an idol is something that is worshipped, and the Blessed Virgin is NOT to be worshipped, that is for God alone - I think she would agree with me on that point.

Now, on to the answer:

Blessed Virgin Mary
Mother of the Church
Queen of Peace
Mother of God
Advocate
Helper
Mediatrix
Our Lady
and Queen of Heaven

just to name a few.

Although Mary was the mother of Jesus, she got NO special attention from Jesus after he started his three-and a-half-year ministry. He gave her honor as any son would give his parents. But Jesus did not venerate Mary. If people would accept what the Bible says about Mary, they would know that she had no titles next to her name, like the ones given by AMDG and Midge above. NOWHERE in the Bible is Mary called such fictitious names as Mother of the Church, Queen of Heaven, Advocate, Queen of Peace, Mediatrix, Queen of Angels, or Queen of Prophets. And she certainly was not a perpetual virgin. She did have other children after Jesus was born.

Do not let imperfect sentimentality blind you to the truth. Ely C above said that no one went through as much suffering as Mary did. Although it's tough to lose a son, Mary did not come close to the sufferings of Paul. When you get a minute, go to 2 Cor. 11:24-27 and see for yourself that Paul endured a whole lot more sufferings than did Mary.

Mary was a loyal servant of God like all the other loyal first-century Christians, who, incidentally, did NOT put Mary on a pedestal.

She deserves to be honored and venerated, because next to Christ, she suffered the most and carried the brunt from her conception to the crucifixion and death of our Lord. No one comes close to all the sufferings she went through.

She is foremost--Mother. She interceded for me and through her intersession I came to Jesus her son. She is so loving and kind and beautiful and strong and wise. She has several names: Holy virgin of Virgins, Mother of Divine Grace, Mother most pure, Mother most chaste, Mother inviolate, Mother undefiled, Mother of good Council, Mother of our Redeemer, Mirror of Justice, Seat of Wisdom, Spiritual Vessel, Vessel of Honor, Mystical Rose, Tower of David, Tower of Ivory, House of Gold, Ark of the Covenant, Gate of Heaven, Queen of Angels, Queen of Patriarchs, Queen of Apostles, Queen of Martyrs, Queen of Prophets, ---just to name a few.

SHE is the MOTHER of JESUS CHRIST and the wife of Joseph. SHE is the ultimate MOTHER FIGURE and cares about her FAMILY. SHE can INSPIRE and give us WISDOM and KNOWLEDGE about what sacrifices ALL MOTHERS go through who love their children. along with showing us the end results of the agony, pain and suffering when mans inhumanity to man overcomes compassion and love.
