6 months ago she fractured her back. She was treated with antibiotics for 5 1/2 months. We kept her confined and she seemed to improve. One month ago she started going downhill to the point where she could barely walk, was in obvious pain. We took her to the vet and he put her on a course of steroids, more antibiotics. We had decided against any surgery because there were no guarantees. Over the next few days, she got worse. It was terrible to watch. I took her to the vet hospital and they x-rayed her and did a blood test. The x-ray showed the infection around the fracture site was still there but the blood test came back normal--no infections. they gave me pain meds and a different antibiotic. She just did not improve. so, as a family we decided to have her put down. My husband took her to the vet hospital and after examining her refused our request-said there was nothing wrong with her. So, we have her at home and don't know what to do next.

That's so sad. I have a 7 month old mini-dachshund and Im always worried about back problems with him. :-(

If she's in pain - I'd consult with a different vet. A doggie should not have to live like that. In the meantime, make her as comfortable as possible, love her and give her a kiss on the nose for me.

Aww I'm sorry to hear that. I have had to with back problems, one severe with paralysis. When BuddyFrank was first injured he spent a week at the vet. He had IV pain meds, steriods and anti biotics. He never walked again, but the pain went away. He lived for a year and half after that. There is a daschund support group on yahoo for the back problems, and the members have a wealth of informantion, but I cant remember the name. She may be on pain meds the rest of her life. My vet said to give 1 ibuprofen a day 200 mg, the other dog was smaller so I gave him half. My cousins vet says not to give ibuprofen, aspirin is better for the dogs. Check with your vet on which one and keep her still and comfortable. The vet wanted to put BuddyFrank to sleep, but I was fim on that with a NO. My suggestion after all that, is just keep her on the meds. OH yeah, I suggest another vet, some are better at doxie back problems than others.

I've taken one of my dogs to a homeopathic vet for acupuncture and chiropractic treatments. He went for 3 acupuncture and 2 chiropractic treatments in total. It's been over 1 1/2 years now and he's still totally pain free. If this were my dog, I'd try it. My dog's problems were not the same as yours, but other people I've talked to have also had amazing results.

I would find a dauschund group or club & any/all info I could locate online as it is fairly (back problems) common with the breed. I'd look for others that went through similiar & ask for Vet recomendations or refferals and get a second opinion.

I knew someone whose Dachsie had back problems and couldn't even walk. They tried acupuncture and, with time, it really helped. Some Vet clinics do this.

You could also tried a chiropracter that works on dogs. Some people say that helps as well.
