Some Christians claim that the Harry Potter books and films glorify Satan, because Harry and his friends are witches. Well, for one thing, Satan is never mentioned in the books or films. For another, witches don't worship Satan. They worship pagan nature gods. The reason why they are often depicted as worshipping Satan is because of propaganda put out by the Catholic Church during the Middle Ages.

Because they never actually read it, but their pastors who also never read it told them it was satanic.

Unfortunately, I think many Evangelicals can only interact with pop culture by condemning it, especially if it's something the neighbors enjoy without a problem.

A poster here once said that a problem with some Christians is that they look harder for Satan than Jesus. (If you're here, thanks, and sorry I don't remember your name.) I don't get why.

I actually channel-surfed when I was sick at home one day, and saw this show by John Hagee condemning Harry Potter, and a woman on it claimed she could tell it had some kind of evil power because "kids who have TV and video games would rather read a 700-page book now"! Wow, I guess Louisa May Alcott and Jane Austen had evil powers, too, because I loved reading their books as a kid.

I agree. The Harry Potter witches aren't religious witches, they're fantasy-story witches. They don't even worship nature. And real witches can't do the things they do in the story.

Christians don't like them because they are told witches are evil, and Harry Potter presents them as the good guys.

But I think what really gets them is that Harry Potter relies on himself, makes his own decisions, and breaks rules. He never turns to a deity for help, he never counts on anything outside of himself. This is totally against what Chrisitanity teaches. Christians are to rely solely on their deity, and not themselves; and they are to be obedient and not question.

So the whole approach to life is against what they believe.

And for another thing, the Harry Potter characters don't worship anyone. Ever.
Though to be honest I haven't heard anything about people wanting the books banned for a few years now. Maybe people just don't care as much here in Australia.

How about adding that Satan himself can not do anything except tempt and encourage a person to act....the choice is theirs....many depict Satan as powerful...and he/she is with words and ideas but not with absolute power.....they also depict Satan as ugly and scarey looking...if that were the case who would go to him/her and listen....has to be pretty inviting to bring a lot of people along....with this said I think many Christian's are well meaning when the attack Harry and his friends because it is so appealing like Satan is...but remember it is just fiction and if parents do their job their is not power in it...again like I have said many times....it is just man law

Those that don't like the books never read them. I'm Roman Catholic (gee, the bad guys) and I adore the Harry Potter books. I use them as a reference for what's hot these days for when I finish my novel, I"ll know if there is a market for it.

They don't like it because they see magic as evil and will only accept heroes that defeat magic without using it themselves. Check out the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, it's thinly veiled Christian ideology. And Harry Potter targets kids and they don't want any ideas to compete with their brainwashing.

Thing about Harry Potter has encouraged kids to go back to the books, once they are hooked to them they will start to read and read and read more...and christianity always fits better in a non reading non questioner society.

They do not make a stink about "Harry Potter" books and movies. Because of their demonic themes, true Christians choose to avoid such entertainment. However, if you want to be entertained by such content, they will not stop you.

because they have such seething hate for other works of fiction, other than the bible, that people enjoy more than their fictional story.

plus, it shows a different fictional point of view, and they hate that too. Harry Potter books don't yak about bible bible bible, and jeebus jeebus jeebus, and that puts their panties in a wad!
