Paganism increased in man the light of beauty, the largeness and height of his life, his aim at many sided perfection
Christianity gave him some vision of divine love and charity
Buddhism has shown him a noble way to be wiser, gentler, purer,
Judaism and Islam showed how to be religiously faithful in action and zealously devoted to God
Hinduism has opened to him the largest and profoundest spiritual possiblilities.
And Finally athesists...are not God disguised laughing at himself and mocking at himself ?
(As written by Sri Aurobindo-the great hindu philosopher)
What do you think?

Truth seeker you and I have the meeting of the minds. Although I do not conform to any religion I feel that religion has been a neccessary stepping stone to evolve spiritually and connect with god(the acceptance of oneself through the love of god) Some need relgion because they need a foundation, and rules to abide by, otherwise they would feel a lack of direction. Every religion has it's purpose and should be respected. I agree that atheists know god, but do not know how to define what that means.
I wish you well.

I think I agree that nearly all religions have done *some* good for mankind.
However, the statement above also completely ignores the BAD that nearly all religions have done to mankind.
christianity -- has stifled the true search for knowledge by punishing anything it didn't agree with, and has killed millions who would not convert.
Buddhism ignores the reality of man's nature, and without "outside protection" would have long since been wiped off the earth (by christians and others).
Judaism and Islam teach that their god is jealous, vengeful, spiteful, and punishes those who do "wicked things" -- i.e. things that don't fit in their religions structure.
Hinduism ignores scientific reality, and assigns supernatural causes to natural phenomenon, which can hinder true knolwedge.
And even atheism -- while not a religion -- can foster hatred of people practicing religion, intolerance, etc.
That there are good and bad sides to all religions (and philosophies) is because they all come from humans, who all have good and bad sides. We humans continually struggle to balance our desire to live in harmony in a community with our nature to be greedy and violent, and our religions and philosophies reflect that struggle. Religion *can* emphasize one part of that struggle over another, but it can also be used as an excuse to hate others who believe differently, as each religion claims to have some "absolute truth" which anyone who doesn't believe is considered "wrong" by that religion.
More bad than good in the final analysis, IMHO.

I think he forgot to list all the cons of religion... When checked side by side, the cons FAR outweigh the pros.... War, murder, genocide, discrimination...the lists grows and grows.
I dunno about you, but I could live with less warfare and murder and a little less of the "vision of divine love and charity" and "zealous devotion" to non-existent entities at the same time....

Now list all the ways religions have harmed mankind.
Hitler did great things for the German economy, but he was still a jerk.
