Rastafarianism is a religious and political movement originating in Jamaica in the 1930s that bases its doctrine on selections from the Bible and regards Ethiopia as the Promised Land and Haile Selassie as a messiah, with many members advocating nonviolence and rejecting materialism.

Rastafarians believe that Haile Selassie, also named Ras Tafari, the last emperor of Ethiopia (who died in 1975), is the Messiah. They tend to reject European culture and ideas and are particularly noted for their use of marijuana. Reggae music is heavily influenced by Rastafarianism.

There are some 180,000 Rastafarians worldwide.
