You might think about trying this book called "The Movie Star Diet" by Steve Simmons. It helped me lose thirty pounds in 2 1/2 months when I didn't think anything would work. My goal to begin with was only 20 lbs! It has a really easy plan to follow and an excellent workout to use as well. You'll lose 15 pounds a lot sooner than next September and being a vegetarian should be no problem.

Here's my standard weight loss response:
Some things to keep in mind:
1) It is impossible to target fat to burn - what you can do, however, is strengthen the muscles beneath the body fat, which generally makes things look better (and it's better for you, anyway).
2) Muscle is more dense than fat. As you begin a weight training program, you may notice that you lose inches but gain weight. No worries - that means you're building muscle. You'll see why this is good if you scroll down to point number three...
3) Muscle boosts your metabolism because it uses more nutrients than fat. Thus, building muscle will help you lose fat faster - sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Now, onto the plan!
You should try to jog/run 30 minutes a day if you can. Don't go fast - this isn't a sprint. If you find that 30 minutes is too long and you can't do that, then no big deal. You now have a Goal. Try to at least keep moving for 30 minutes...walking is fine.
If you have access to an elliptical machine, that's a good alternative.
In either case, as you get stronger/faster/better, add time and (on a machine) resistance. If you're running, grab those two- or three-pound weights or cans of beans. You'd be surprised how much harder it is (bonus: You tone your arm muscles just lugging them around for a few miles).
If you have access to a gym, take a day off from running once or twice a week to begin a weight-lifting program. Most health clubs will give you one training session with a personal trainer who will berate you and make you feel worthless. Usually, the first one is free, so it's OK. If you want to feel like crap again, it'll cost you - but you probably don't need to see that old meanie-head again, because he or she will have just put you through a full-body muscle-building workout. And that's what you'll want to do. Work your way through exercises for chest, arms, back, and legs, though not necessarily in that order - whatever works for you.
McDonalds put out a series of four exercise DVDs a few months ago in the US, you can find them on eBay for about 5 bucks each.
Adopt a healthy (or at least healthier) diet - cut out all sodas, even diet sodas. And switch, if you haven't already, to unsweetened fruit juices. Allow yourself a few treats every now and again just so you don't feel like you've changed your entire life just to lose 5 pounds, because that will only depress you.
The key, in the end, isn't necessarily weight loss or muscle gain or whatever. It's feeling like you've taken control of your body, which is what you're really going for.

Being a vegetarian is good, as long as you eat things that will give you protein. You will still need to avoid high fat foods like cheese, even if you are eating vegetarian. You still have to watch your calorie intake and exercise.
Congrats on quitting smoking. I know from experience that its very hard not to replace the cigarettes with food. You can do it! And the good news is, you're only very slightly overweight, so you are catching this when its still completely manageable.
I did the Weight Watchers flex point program on my own. I use dwlz.com for advice, bought the two books on ebay and I lost 28 pounds. It's more of a lifestyle than a diet and really helps you be aware of how much you are eating for a whole lifetime.

A diet won't do it alone.Get physical. The problem with being physically active is that the results are slow and some people tend to get impatient and give up. Start slow and keep at it! Your best bet will be altering your attitude about exercise just as you had to do about smoking in order to quit. Make if fun and not a chore or task. If you were committed and strong enough to quit smoking I have no doubt you can make some physical activity a part of your life. Good luck !

Vegitarian might help if you also supplement with a good multi-vitamin. I would go with something that also has ginseng in it and make sure it has iron (you are female & not eating red meat...) unless you plan on eating ALOT of spinach & brocolii
The best way to loose weight is to (1) eat in moderation with smaller more frequent meals... ie: five snack sized meals instead of 3 large meals (2) excersize... there are so many to choose from.... you wanna something really cool that will also lift your self-esteem.... go for Belly Dancing lessons... You will have a truely re-defined waistline and firmer belly, a greater sense of your body, a higher self-esteem & some D*MN sexy dancing lessons you can WOW your future husband with

Eat balanced meals and exercise.
Chewing on twigs and carrots might help you loose weight, but have you ever seen what a vegetarian looks like after a while? You don't want to be pale with your eyes sunken in for your wedding pictures.

If you want to lose weight **fast**try this for 2 weeks:
Take a One-A-Day multivitamin DAILY and Try the "2468 Diet" which keeps your metabolism in check. Do not use any butter or salt on your veggies. I prefer just using a lot of pepper.
Mon - 200 calories
Tues- 400 calories
Wed- 600 calories
Thurs-800 calories
Fri - 200 calories
Sat - 400 calories
Sun - 600 calories
For dinner drink 1 liter of water within 2 mins time then eat 1 Lipton Cup-A-Soup. Drinking the water quickly will fill you up but it does need to be atleast 1 liter.
