I have a female border collie/lab mix five years old. Two or three times a year she scratches eyes causing hair loss, scabbing, and bleeding. I have to put a plastic cone on to prevent this. I never noticed any fleas and tried different foods, but nothing has changed. Any suggestions?

This happened to my dog too. The vet said it was an allergy caused by dirtiness. Is the place where your dog sleeps dirty? If it is, clean it immediately. The dirt can come from the outside too, so look out. Also, take your dog to the vet to give her a medicinal cream to apply it in the affected area for faster healing and antibiotics. When your dog is under treatment, use the plastic cone to prevent her form scratching the affected areas.

Allergies, ask a vet for some medication. The poor dog needs relief.

Sounds like it could be a plant or pollen allergy. Does this happen shortly after walks, or when you walk in certain places? You could ask your vet about anti-histamine tablets for when the problem occurs. Otherwise, the only treatment is the collar I'm afraid.

I agree, it definitely could be allergies, especially if it's only specific times of the year. See if your vet can't give some kind of medication or let you know what you can do to alleviate the discomfort.
