No a 4 hour flight is not Long Haul.

DO NOT TAKE ANY UNPRESCRIBED OR UNNECCSARY DRUGS! If you are a nervous flyer just let the crew know as you board and they should do everything they can to make you feel more comfortable.

I would reccomend you stop taking asprin, it could cause problems if you were to have a medical emergency on board WHICH IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY!

Have you had a dvt in the past? If so, then you should see your PCP or your hemotologist for a rx for lovenox. You will need to be on it for the day of the flight, as well as the day of the return flight. FYI other responders, if you have had a dvt in the past a 4 hour flight CAN give you a dvt. Be sure to get up and walk around once every hour if you can. Taking aspirin won't truly help prevent a dvt, as dvt's are formed in the deep veins not arteries.

If you have not had a dvt before, then I wouldn't really worry. Get up and walk around every once in a while, but a 4 hour flight probably won't be long enough to trigger anything.

In either case, keep hydrated as this also helps to prevent dvts.

Definitely not long haul, as others have mentioned BUT if you are scared:
Don't drink!
Take an aspirin if it makes you feel better, it does thin the blood so in theory helps agains DVT (which is nigh impossible to get on a 4hr flight!)
Try getting an over the counter sedetive... I used phenegen (sp? pronounced fen-a-gin). It's over the counter and when i took it not only did I not care AT ALL about flying, but i also slept like a log... probably not a good idea if you have to drive at the other end tho!

Don't be afraid of DVT. It happens to very few people.

Just be sure to keep yourself hydrated with plenty of water, get up and stretch your legs occasionally and, if you're still scared, you can buy compression/flight stockings at your chemist.

Believe me, 4 hours is not that long a flight. DVT is more likely to occur on, say, a flight from the UK to Australia where you'd be in the air for 24 hours.

It is no problem. It is no different than a four hour ride in a coach, only more comfortable and the ride is higher. keep hydrated and walk around now and again if you feel any cramp etc. in your legs. D.V.T. is not known to happen on shorthaul flights such as this, if your worried wear the special flight socks that you can buy. Just enjoy the experience, you will wonder why you were ever worried about it in the first place.

Like everyone said 4 hours is not a long haul.
Unless you cannot take asprin for medical reasons take one before you get on the plane, drink water, do not drink alcohol or only a small amount, get up and walk around or wiggle you legs while you are sitting. You also want to try flight socks, wouldn't normally recommend them for a short flight for long haul they are great!

if your worried about dvt and you dont wish to walk around the plane due to your fright of flying just get a pair of socks in the chemist and that will calm your fears but 4 hrs is just a hop a long haul is 10 hours upwards dont worry and enjoy the flight

An aspirin does help avoid dvt as it thins the blood, but remember to take it at least half an hour before you fly. Valium or Excedrin PM always help you calm down and even sleep if you're nervous. If you can't get either, Kalms may also help (it's a herbal medicine).
Safe journey!

4 hours on a 'plane isn't exactly long haul, take a couple of magazines or a crossword book, flying is, in my opinion, the most boring form of travel.I don't think there is much danger of d.v.t. from a flight of this length. Taking an aspirin may be beneficial as this makes the blood " less sticky",not "thinner" as popular belief has it.If you are making a flight of this length,I presume it is a holiday,if so I hope you have a good relaxed one.B.O.L.

i was absolutely ****ing myself when i first flew. at 24, i finally gave in and got on a plane. but not without dosing myself up on rescue remedy first. you can buy flight socks if you are really worried about dvt, but 4hours isnt really long haul... keep your feet moving, go to the toilet every half hour, (kick the chair infront!) just keep the blood pumping round. but dont do what i did, put my head on my knees with my fingers in my ears, made it ten times worse...!!!
