I rescued a stray cat yesterday, well he was being fed everyday since march, by a women who had cats of her own, but couldnt let him in because her own cats would fight him. She made him a shelter on her patio and he never left her yead. he is 2yrs old....im getting him netured friday. Hes super sweet and loving. Hes been eating regularly, but has not pooped or peed....hes afraid of the litter box...and wants nothing to do with it...he sometimes sits by the door wanting out...guess he thinks he can only pee out there? how do i let him know he can "go" in the litter box...or even in the house, that way i can put his feces in the box and he can smell them. Help Please!...

I have had stray cats myself. Did you put him in the litterbox and move his paws in the litter? Usually thats all you have to do to train a cat to use it.

He may be going somewhere in your place that you are not aware of yet. I would do a thorough check throughout to make sure he isnt using your carpet as his litterbox. That happens a lot with strays.

Give him treats when he uses the litter box to get him to understand that using that box is a good thing, not a bad thing. Are u planning on letting him outside still? Or are you keeping inside completely now? If u let him go inside and outside, it may be harder to train him.

Just start with treats in the litterbox and go from there.

You can buy a litter at your local pet shop that is more like outside. Even shavings would help. Also you can try newspaper shredded up in the box or even just put it on the floor.

If some other cat has been using the box bleach it first, let dry well and then put whatever in the box. Cats have a keen smell and can pick up on smells you wouldn't even know was there.

If all else fails buy a cat harness and a leash and when he is crying at the door to go out to the bathroom, go with him. When he is finished scoop up the remains and put in your litter box for awhile.

Also if your box has a top remove it for now.

try rubbing his paws in the litter to get him use to it
he may not like the smell
you could get a bunch of dirt and grass and put it in the litter box; if he sees grass and uses it, keep doing that then eentually wean him off grass for litter. Over time put a little litter in the box along with grass/dirt. Hopefully, he'll get use to it.
Or... he may smell thath another cat has used that box or litter...

Hope something will work out for u!

Fill the litter pan with sod or soil. Or, don't use a litter pan, as he is not used to climbing into something, just put the sod on a boot tray or a yard waste garbage bag laid on the floor. If he begins to go on this, gradually introduce the litter pan, then litter (scatter a tablespoon or so of litter on the soil; add another tablespoon or so every week).

We found a stray cat once and as the winter months approached, we started letting her in the house to keep her warm. I ended up just putting a litter box in the laundry room and as time progressed she just started using it. I never placed her in the box, or showed her where it was. . .she just found it and started using it. I don't think it's anything you have to teach a cat, they just know.

There are good trainers for cats to teach them to use litter boxes. Or you could train him yourself by putting him in the litter box so that he gets used to it. Don`t force him to smell the box, cats don`t like it. It may take sometime though for your cat to get used to it.

I have heard that putting a little top layer of garden dirt over the litter can help with this. It is a smell that he is used to.

keep him in a small room with the litter box.. eventually he will have to go... and will
good thing you are neutering him
use non-scented clumping litter as this is the litter cats prefer most.. scented stuff is often disliked particularly by former outdoor cats...
