Really depends on the dog and where you get it. I would recommend one of the following two options:

1. Get a dog from a shelter. Quite often about $100 but that can include first set of shots and spay/neuter or a discount on such things. Check with the shelter for details.

2. Get a dog from a breed rescue. Depends on the breed but $150-$250 or so depending on the dogs age etc and it may include some of the items above.

Do Not under any circumstances by a dog from a pet store as many sell puppy mill puppies. If for some reason 1 or 2 above does not work out for you find a reputable breeder.

Also remember that the initial cost is just a start as food, vet care, and pet sitting if you go out of town will all come at a cost. The amount will vary greatly based on the breed in terms of how much they eat and what kind of health issues they have.

The initial cost of the dog is the cheapest part of dog ownership, and that all depends on where you get the and/or what type of dog you get.

If you buy the adopt the dog from a shelter/rescue it would cost about 80-150 depending on where you live.

If you buy from a private breeder, it depends on the type of dog. A responsible, caring breeder will not charge you outrageous prices because they are not in it for the money. A backyard breeder mostly likely will charge outrageous prices because they ARE only in it for the money. This also depends on where you live.

The part that can get really expensive is the vet care. At the very least, the dog will need an annual exam and vaccinations. The cost of that depends on where you live also. A vet visit for me costs 40 dollars, and that's not including any medicines, x-rays, fecal/blood tests, etc. Thankfully I have a very healthy dog thus far and have not needed to pay for any extra vet care. The vaccinations cost me about 45 dollars total for this year. You may not be so lucky with your dog. It might need lots of vet care. Can you afford to pay for it all? There is also pet insurance to help cover those costs. I don't have it right now because I have a savings account to just for my pets to cover emergencies. I just put the 40 dollars I would spend on insurance a month into that account. It works for me.

Then you have to factor in the cost of food and supplies. I spend 40 dollars a month on food for a 45 pound dog. Smaller dogs will be cheaper in this area and larger dogs more expensive.Toys for her run me around 20 dollars a month because she is a chewer.

If you want to have a well behaved, social dog, I would highly recommend that you and your dog take obedience classe which I would guess run between about 70-150 dollars. I paid 100 for 8 weeks.

Now you have the ultimate expense-your time and attention. Do you have enough to give to a dog? Dogs need exercise and play time. If you buy a puppy, do you have the patience to teach housebreaking and to deal with the messes they WILL make? Will it make you angry if they ruin some of your stuff? Because it will most likely do that to.

Oh my goodness, how could I have forgotten about flea and heartworm preventative? That costs me about 70 dollars every 6 months. I don't remember exactly how much it cost me because it was 3 months ago and it was together with some other vet expenses.

That's what a dog costs. If you don't plan on being a responsible, loving owner, please don't get a dog.

Ok if you are talking about the price to buy a dog then your looking at £300+ for a well bread pedigree. If you want to help a rescue dog the RSPCA ask for around £100.

If you are asking how much the up keep of a dog is then this depends on what dog you have.

I have a 7mth old Cavalier pup. His food (James Wellbeloved) costs us £6 ever few weeks. His insurance is just under £10 per mth.

Of course there are other things to buy when you 1st buy a dog like toys, bed, brush and food bowls.

To get a mixed breed dog could cost anywhere from $50 on up for an adult from a shelter. Puppies usually costs more.

Check out www.petfinder.org to look at shelters/rescues near you. You can see what they have and what it costs.

If you want a particular kind of dog as opposed to a random mix check out breed specific rescues also at petfinder. Breed rescues are great because you get pets that are usually: fixed, partially trained, past puppy chewing, up to date on shots and some history of the dog is known.

If you want to spend $500 on up, skip the pet store and find a breeder who can show you the parents have been screened for health problems. A "cheap" $500 pup isn't so cheap at age 2 when its hips are bad and fixing them costs $5000.

The BIG question is how much does it cost to keep a dog once you've got it.
* Plan on neutering it, if its a puppy (costs vary some shelters offer low cost surgery)
* $?? Food (depending on size--ask shelter/where you're getting how much it eats.)
* Probably one vet visit a year ($50?)
* Heartworm prevention, flea and tick stuff--maybe $25 a month in summer, less in spring and fall.
* Bed, collar, leash, toys, bowls, dog house?
* Town license
* Occasional treats
* Training classes or books to make your dog a great companion

***Certain breeds of dogs may require additional renter's or homeowner's insurance or may void your insurance so find that out first.

As you can see, getting the dog is only part of the cost; keeping it is where it adds up.

You'll probably get a dog from a rescue centre for free, or you can pay hundreds if not thousands of pounds for a pure breed with a good pedigree.

The cost of owning a dog can very quickly mount up; food, health care and so forth. But the highest cost is the amount of time you must invest in the dog.

A lot. Not only do you have the cost of buying them there are all the innoculations they have to get, food, treats, collar, lead, and all other sorts of stuff like bedding and water/food bowls. I would say on average it costs me about £20.00p per week to feed my dog and although I got him from a dogs home it still cost me £100.00p for that. Having said that it has been and will carry on being money well spent as he's as much a part of our family as the kids are.

Depends on which breed it is. A rough price for a dog is around 300-600. It varies on how good the pedigree is and the breed. Some dogs costs a lot more like British Bulldogs which cost around 2000 k.
I know if you get a dog from Battersea they charge you something like £150.

To buy initially? Depends on breed, age and source.

To feed? Depends on size of dog as to how much it eats (A St Bernard costs more to feed than a chihuahua).

To insure? Around £18 per month for a policy with decent cover.

depends on where you get them, and what kind of breed you get. a dog from the shelter usually costs around $100. a large purebred dog from a breeder may cost from $500-$1000, and a small purebred dog from a breeder may cost from $200-$500. but whatever you do, don't buy a dog from a pet shop! b/c they are usually very prone to diseases (b/c they haven't been bred properly). even if they have health certificates that guarantee that they're healthy, 99% of the time the dog will have recurring health problems throughout its life that will cost you hundreds of dollars in vet bills.
