Some Christians think that ciggarette (nicotine) addiction is caused by an evil spirit. Some even give the spirit a name: "spirit of nicotine."
I have struggled with nicotine addiction for a long time even when I was already a Christian. I'd stop and a few months or years of being a non-smoker, something terrible will happen and I smoke one again... and then another... another. In an effort to gain complete victory over this irritating habit, I've asked for prayers, submitted to a "casting out of demons" session; rent myslef in reoentance, cried to God for help. Through all these struggles, I've come to realize that addiction is due to our sin-nature. We are in bondage to a lesser or greater extent to the flesh and the "lusts" of the flesh. Advancing and growing in spritual maturity means a greater and greater realization of the never-ending battle we wage against our own sinful nature, the desires of the flesh and conquering them one at a time. Paul said that we will never completely escape this battle or win "complete victory" this side of heaven over all the weaknesses of the flesh, but our goal is to advance and bear the fruits of the spirit. Once I realized that it was not demons causing me to WANT to smoke, I was in better position to get the right tools to beat the problem. I bought nicotine patches, followed the directions.... and quit. Now I know I have a weakness for smoking, so I avoid as much as possible all situations that will TEMPT me to smoke.
Now to your question, is nicotine addiction caused by a (demonic) spirit? In my own humble opinion - NO. Like all addicitons of the flesh, nicotine addiction is a fruit of the sinful nature. And, whether you accept this or not, this is the best advice I can give you, beloved in the Lord.

Evil spirits, or negative entities, as they are also called, zero in what is hidden deep inside of you that mirrors the energy they express. For example, if you have been secretly hating another person, then the spirit of hatred will be attracted to you. If you have been secretly lusting after someone or after a position of power, the spirit of lust will be attracted to you. The only response when--and if--this is occuring is to respond with love. Love is the greatest and in some sense the only power there is. For ex., love the person you have been hating. Love is not the same as liking. Love the person you have been lusting after, by letting go and doing the right thing. Love your community or church by doing your part and caring about the people, not striving for a position of power. I said "if" in that last paragraph because there are times when we imagine that evil spirits are attacking us when what is really happening is an outward manifestation of the evil that is already within us and is ready to be released. If this is indeed what is happening to you, then it might be better not see this as an attack, which gives way too much power to these evil spirits or negative entities, or even to the inward condition that attracted them, but rather as a greeting. As in, "Oh, there they are again. I wonder what they've zeroed in on within me that needs to be released through love? Hmmm?" Then do some serious but nonjudgmental self-examination and release the negativity within you. It takes time. Be careful not to flatter yourself. If this is what is happening to you, making it a matter of evil spirits taking a special interest in you may attract to you or manifest the spirit of pride, the kind of pride which will contribute to your downfall and separation from other people who might otherwise befriend you or help you, or those you might be able to befriend or help. All people experience these "greetings" from time to time. The only difference is that some are aware and some are not. Above all, pray constantly. Remember that God is Love, and that Christ expelled evil spirits from those who were ready. Peace to you. May love prevail.

There are no such things as "evil spirits." Addiction to smoking is caused by the nicotine in cigarettes, which increases dopamine levels in the brain. Dopamine is our primary "feel good" chemical, and our bodies LIKE IT when our brains get flooded with dopamine. If you smoke, you get dopamine, and it feels good. Your body wants to feel good again, so you crave another cigarette. The more you smoke, the more your body builds up a tolerance to nicotine, which means you need more and more nicotine to keep up the same dopamine levels, so you smoke more and more. Addiction is the body's response to physical and chemical stimuli -- nothing to do with evil spirits.
Try a little knowledge instead of superstition :)

I just quite smoking myself. It certainly feels like a demon has a hold on you because it seemed impossible to do. I'll tell you what I did. I said to myself that if I only had a short time to live, what would I want to prove to myself that I can do in this life time. and I said smoking. I wanted to prove that I can quite no matter what. I started out on the 1st day, thinking about cigs x 50 /day, 2nd day I thought about them 20 x /day, the third day 5x/day, by the fourth day I thought about them 3x /day. It becomes alot easier with time. With all that in mind ....YOU CAN DO IT !!!!! JUST GET THROUGH 3 DAYS THEN IT'S SO TOLERABLE !!!!! GO 4 IT

seriously now .. it is an addiction , a natural process when the body gets used to something
this isnt evil at all
and you can give it up with determination and some smoking aids such as patches etc
if my mother .. a smoker of 40 years can give it up ( all be it with a struggle ) and she is not religious at all ... then can we assume that she done this herself without help from God etc ?
no disrespect intended but you have it in you to do this xxx
i am also trying at the moment to give up

smoking is a health hazard, and it could kill anyone in due time. i ts kills u softly. Our body is our fathers temple and we are to give it the up most respect and not feed it anything negative or harmful. But indulge it with positivity. Smoking anything is the enemy's property. We have to be strong to stand against any negativity. It's not easy to quit a habit that you've taken on for most of your life, but with the love and faith of our Creator, anything is possible. When He's truly in your heart, he can eliminate you from any type of negativity. Just continue to seek his love and his way of being, and what pleases him, and he will come in and release you of anything that is NOT pleasing to him.
May God Bless U!!

Hahahaha! No, my dear. Evil spirits exist, but I have yet to meet one who wills a person to smoke. Usually, they have better things to do.

Satan does of course desire nothing more than our total destruction, and does everything in his power to bring it about. However, when we ourselves choose to engage in self-destructive behavior, Satan doesn't have to get involved. There is a great difference between spiritual bondage and chemical dependence, though there can be some overlap.

The flesh started the habit, but a spirit could attach itself to you after you indulge. I don't know that is the case, but you could go to a Pentecostal church and ask them to pray for you. You need to accept Jesus into your heart first.I wish you the best.
