I was relieved that they might actually know what it was after 10 years of trying to work it out! Also relieved that it wasn't something I could control and I wasn't just a nutter!!! I was a bit confused at the new information but generally the diagnosis did me a world of good x

I was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. I was clinicly diagnosed about 2 years ago. I had a total mental break down and spent 7 days in a mental health ward. I went to a psychiatrist and all he did was prescribed me medicine and we talked very little. But i sought further medical advice and through my own research and talking to a therapist I am bi polar. It makes me even more upset to know that it is a disease and there is no cure.

Stephen Fry ( uk ) did a fantastic documentary about his experiences living with bi-polar disorder, and profoundly stated that he would not change a thing about his life. My husband was bi polar, living with him was a roller coaster, fantastic highs and crushing lows. Altho it all ended very suddenly 3 months ago I have to say i wouldn't change a thing either. So I would have to say relief that there's a diagnosis, and now a knowledge that being bi polar is perfectly acceptable, and can even be fun.

A little bit of both. I was diagnosed in the middle of a manic/mixed episode, absolutely convinced there was nothing wrong with me. I went to the doctor to get 'proof' that I was fine and everyone else in the house had a problem.
It ha staken a long time to accept the diagnosis, but my meds are working very well for me.

When I was dx with all the disorders I have (including multiple sclerosis, panic & anxiety, bi-polar, social anxiety, OCD......) I felt like saying "I told you so" to my family & friends who thought I was just lazy or just shy or just didn't have an interest in doing anything. So I'd have to say that I felt relief & was glad to finally be dx with a legitimate illness.

Hi, it's not a disease it's a disorder. Diagnosis is usually very hard to come by because it's a label that will not go away and clinicians are hesitant to do that to some one. It is, without doubt and no matter what you might hear to the contrary, a neuro-biochemical-disorder that responds very well to properly administered medication.

when diagnosed there are mixed feelings.
finally you have a name for all the moods you were going through and then you think why me.
the plus side is that medication can bring it under control although there is no cure for it.
at least you will have normal behaviour so people will not come to their own conclusions if you know what i mean.
take your tablets though as when you are on a downer you wont feel like hurting your self.

Bi Polar disorder is just a medical term for you weren't raised with a stable family and now you are mentally messed up by it. Trust me, Doctors are way too fast to medicate and diagnose people for it and the easiest solution is to therapy and learning to control yourself...its hard..but pills aren't always the solution. The only mental disorder that I find legitimate is Schizophrenia..and alot of that is brought on by drugs.
