There are alot of options.
1. Scan your hard drive for worms, trojans, and other harmful software. I suggest avast antivirus because it is free for 30 days.
2. Defragment your hard drive.
3. Cleanup your harddrive using the cleanup utility found under accessories-system tools from the start menu. The same place the defragmenter is found.
4. Last resort would be to reformat your hard drive, but don't do that yourself unless you have made a backup or you know what you are doing.

Yes, the stuff the other people mentioned was good, defrag, file compression etc..
Also, try "Win Cleaner": "ONE-CLICK CLEAN UP." It really works great and makes your computer run so much better. It costs something like $40. Staples and Comp USA should sell this product.

99% its over loaded temp files or spyware
first check out your tools in internet explorer clean your files
go to microsoft.com
make sure you have windows defender updated and run it to delete unwanted spyware
also you want to go to my computer c drive
right click and properities
here you want to do disk clean up
then click tools and do a check disk
which will prompt you with a box check both and do do when next restart and restart the computer after that finishes you want to do the defrag
