$50 is going to get you a wreck. It'll cost you a fortune to get it road legal.
Set your sights a bit higher and save a bit longer if neccessary.
$500 should get you a nice reliable runabout.

Since the salvage value is more than what you offer, perhaps you could scout your town and look in all the empty lots and in drive ways to find a salvageable car for your price. I would be prepared to make repairs and to have to put money into it beyond your purchase price.
I got my first car out of an Orange grove near my house. It had been abandoned there for years. I towed it to my school auto shop and spent the year getting it running and registered. I learned so much in that year that I have always been able to service and repair my own cars.

There are many ways to find a CHEAP car....local newspapers, auto trader papers, Ebay, ask friends or family...just make sure it's in good running order so you don't have to spend a lot to keep it running. Good luck.
