You know the trouble with the American Right, especially the Hannity, Rush bunch? They believe and incite these who listen to them into legalizing, justifying anything American does in the name of Patriotism. In the old days if you disagreed with Government you were called unpatriotically but after finding that did not work they switched to you do not care about or support our troops.
Grenada was another real threat they were building a long landing strip for Cuban and Russian war planes. Sure, didn't you know they were building them? It could not have been to accommodate the new larger tourist carrying craft could it? Well, we sent 1200+(6000) troops, gun ships, bombers too bad the Cubans had less then 50 troops and that we suffered 19 deaths and an estimated 300 to 1000 civilians. Well Rush, Hannity and the Right is happy.
So happy that we soon invaded Panama and arrested a sovereign head of State this time killing 1000 to 4000 civilian, using 20,000 troop losing 23. Then you ask why countries hate us. It is ok we are Americans, when someone else does it they are an invader, or worse. Double Standards!
God Bless Us and the Southern People
To Boonietec who it seems believe the hype:
"The medical school’s chancellor, Charles Modica, polled students and found that 90% did not want to be evacuated. The remaining 10% wanted a free ride home. Interviewed later 100% stated they were in no danger".
At the end of the Cold War Cuba allowed research into their records (any records without oversight). It seems the Russians were offering less and less help and the Cubans were looking for capital. They sent doctors, engineers through out the world some even working for American firms. Grenada had tried on several occassions to get the US to build the airport but the concession price was to heavy and they turned to the Cubans.

No WMDs. Yes they appear to appreciate it. Yes to freedom and democracy. No to death camps.
Here are the details from Wikipedia.
The U.S. Invasion of Grenada, codenamed Operation Urgent Fury, was an invasion of the island nation of Grenada by the military forces of the United States of America, Canada, and several Caribbean nations. On October 25, 1983, six days after Prime Minister Maurice Bishop was executed by Bernard Coard’s Marxist popular political movement (the New Jewel Movement), the United States Armed Forces landed troops on the beaches of Grenada. The landing day is now a national holiday in Grenada, called Thanksgiving Day.

Because they had been taken over by socialist commies who would have given the Soviet Union another friend in our hemisphere, which is the last thing we needed. For those of you who are too young to remember the USSR, they were the ones who had a whole lotta nukes pointed at us, and their leaders were constantly threatening to "bury us". They had already tried to sneak missiles onto Cuba, and would probably have tried the same thing on Grenada. Oh yea, and I almost forgot. There were US citizens (a bunch of college students studying abroad if I remember correctly) that were trapped and possibly being held hostage, and the public outcry was that we needed to rescue them.

Being you were probably enveloped in a cloud of marijuana smoke at the time, let me refresh your memory; the invasion was conducted to safeguard the hundreds of American students who were in danger from the Marxist Regime that took over the Country. Unlike when Democrankie Presidents are in office, Republicans protect Americans whether here at home or overseas. Democrankies are way too busy cutting military budgets and apologizing to the leaders of decrepit European countries to protect our citizens when peril arises.

The excuse used to go in was the rescue the American medical students who were in peril from Cuban troops in that island nation. The truth was that we wanted to evict the Cubans from Grenada to prevent them from spreading communism.

There were a number of reasons we liberated Grenada.
First there was the concern of another group of American citizens being held hostage by a nation controlled by extremists. (Remember that this was only a couple of years after the Hostage Crisis.)
Next - there was the humanitarian concern. People were being mascaraed.
Finally there was the strategic issue of a military airfield (controlled by Cuba and N. Korea) capable of blocking Eastern access to the Panama canal.
FYI - the Grenadian people considered themselves to have been liberated.

Grenada was in the process of forming an alliance with Cuba and Nicaragua. The U.S. was having "issues" with Nicaragua at the time and, well, you already know the deal with Cuba.

Bullies who lack self-confidence beat up weaklings. That's why we "liberated" Grenada rather than let them run their own country as they chose. We were still smarting after losing the Vietnam War, and they were convenient whipping boys.
