Consider it like a college requiring an SAT and/or ACT before they let you take any classes. (only the ASVAB is much easier and a bit shorter.) Still I think that it takes 1-2hours to take depending upon how hard you're trying and how fast you fly through it. It doesn't really require studying, just tests your apptitude, you certainly can study and it may help you. I do not think at all that you can get a waiver for it. If you do well on it you can possibly get an enlistment bonus, and can even start out as an E-2 or E-3 instead of an E-1 (= payraise and not at the very very bottom of the pile) and can get you into some better military schools for the better jobs in the military.

Hey. My fiance is in the Marines and I think it's pretty hard to get a waiver on it, but depending on the mos you want, it may be possible, especially if you are trying to enlist in slow months...like maybe february. I don't know for sure. If you haven't already, then you should at least go try the test... you may not even need to waiver at all. If you fail, then you can still retake it. But, I do know that you can get a waiver for the Army. But, I would definitly encourage you to become one of the few, the proud, the marines. well, goodluck.

you can only get a waiver if you have previously taken the ASVAB... Sorry , but that's the only way that I've ever heard about... You shouldn't need a waiver anyways... it's not a hard test at all... My husband joined in January he took the ASVAB in December of last year and he never studied for it at all.. He's been out of school for 7 years... He scored a 99 out of 100 on it.... I took the test 3 years ago without studying and I got a 96... If you really want in you'll take the ASVAB... If you fail you can always retake it... Good Luck, And thanks for wanting to protect our country...

You need to take the ASVAB. It measures your aptitudes so you can be placed in the best possible career field for your skills and talents. It's not something you necessarily need to study for. My husband did not study and got extremely high marks and was able to pick whatever career field he wanted.
It may help you find an interest you didn't know you had, and that could lead to better things once you retire. My husband was a business major, and now he's in comm...all because he took the test.
If a waiver is possible, it would only end up hurting you in the end because they're going to stick you in whatever job they want.

well, I was enlisted Navy, my hubby is still currently in and was a recruiter for a while...he and myself have never heard of getting a waiver for the ASVAB....
these tests help determine your "mental capacity" and actually the scores show you which jobs you qualify for...I had some friends who were geniuses in high school and thought that they could get out of it due to their grades, wrong...they took the test and scored 98's...
i took my ASVAB when i was 20...been out of high school for 3 years, partying and so on.....i took the test and only studied for 2 weeks...got an 80 on it...ASVAB isnt as hard or as bad as some think

Waivers are only availble if you score within one or two points(line scores) of whatever particular job specialty you are looking for. if you got below a 35(or 50 if you are a GED holder), you must MAKE the time to study. there are numerous books and study aids out there, but be warned, if your score jumps 20 points or more higher then when the last time you took it, you may be reuwired to take it agfain, to rule out cheating.
If you want this badly enough, you will find a way to take the time to study. otherwise, you are showing the recruiter that you are no comitted, and he won;t be willing to help you out.

from what I recall of taking the ASVAB, it isn't so much a test of math and reading as it is a practical exam. If you are worried about it, talk to a marine recruiter. They would be the ones to tell you about any exemptions. Generally the result of your ASVAB dictates the fields you are eligible to enlist for.

I don't think you can get a waiver for the ASVAB. Everyone has to take it. Your score determines what branch of service you can enter and what jobs you qualify for once your enlisted. Enlisting is time consuming process, you'd better make time---a lot of time.

Look, this is much easier. Run a bath of hot water, get in it and make vertical incisions in your wrists just where the veins are. Then just lie there (you could put your favorite cd on before you get in the bath) and you'll be dead in about 20 mins.
No long plane journies, no crappy food, no one shouting at you and most of all no horrible painful death at the hands of someone who is protecting their family from an invader like you will be...
Think about it.
