The ones I have known are generally good natured but hard work to keep because they need to be kept clean and well groomed. x

The only Pomeranians I've had contact with were at a dog show. The lady owner let me touch them & they seemed quite friendly & extremely sweet looking. She did say that they required a lot of grooming to keep their coats looking good.
I was surprised when the YourPureBredPuppy site suggested that you had to be careful not to get nasty, neurotic ones. That site discusses the good & bad points of Poms & is well worth a read.
So I suppose that I'd recommend that you got one from someone who showed their dogs .... a nasty, neurotic dog wouldn't be a show winner. Show dogs have to put up with travelling to shows, being felt all over by a stranger (the judge) who will look inside their mouths & feel in all the delicate little places (lol), not to mention meeting people who want to admire them. Nasty, neurotic ones just wouldn't be able to cope.
The Champdogs site link takes you to a list of breeders of Pomeranians, all in the UK, identified by county. The site also lists owners & sometimes puppies available.
I'd recommend emailing or phoning a breeder near you & asking if you can come & meet their dogs with a view to getting a puppy of your own, once you'd confirmed that they would be a suitable breed of dog for you. I'm sure that most breeders would welcome a sensible approach.
I do hope so.
Good luck ... I must say that they look absolutely adorable as puppies.

Well, all I can say is that my mother has a Pomeranian. Tascha, is the sweetest most loving little dog I have ever seen. She follows my mom everywhere. And when people come to the house to visit. She barks to let us know someone is here and then as soon as they get inside she runs up to them for them to pick her up. She has never ever been mean or vicious to anyone or anything. In fact, when my moms other dog had puppies she as we jokingly termed it. Babysat for the puppies when the mama had to go out and do her business. She groomed them, tried nursing them even though she had no milk for them. She was a great adoptive mom.......
And just so ya know. Tascha has never ever been to a groomers. And she doesn't need to because her coat is absolutely gorgeous...... Ya just really have to make sure ya care for their coat. Brushing them out etc.
I am one of those people that does not believe a dog is bad because of the breed. I really truly believe its in how ya raise them. And how ya fit them in with the family. All I can say is Socialize, socialize and socialize some more. That is soooo important.
Also, my mothers pom has a condition where her hips pop in and out of their socket. It is treatable but is hugely expensive and not gauranteed to even help. Always check into the history of an animal and any health issues it may or may not have and be sure that you are ready emotionally and financially to be able to give it the care that it needs.

My husband bought me a Pomeranian last winter, and he is a handful!!!!
I love him to death, but he really barks outrageously much, and he likes to chew on things. He also is way too independent, and he thinks he can run with the big dogs, so he gets out of the fence (by digging under) and usually just casually moseys back home like it was no problem or big deal even though I've spent loads of time trying to locate his misbehavin' hide. There are good Poms out there too. If you get one, be sure it's not too aggressive or too standoffish, because it will be too independent. If you can afford obedience school, it might be worth a shot. Pomeranians need to have a bath at least once a week! and be brushed at least twice a week! They also need their claws clipped frequently, and you'll have to trim their butt fur too! They require lots of maintenence and patience. They are cute and gorgeous dogs, but looks aren't everything. They are also one of the dog breeds that typically lives the longest - up to 15 years or so, but you have to stick to a special diet. Most of them have really weak stomachs. They are also susceptible to hip and joint problems in later life. They are puppies for life, because they are so playful and hyper, but if trained well - can also make great lap dogs. Make sure you buy from a good breeder - if you decide to get a Pom. Research well. Good luck!!

The Pomeranian breed is a very intelligent little dog,and regardless of what anyone tells you, they're an exceptional little pet to own.True they do require regular brushing to maintain their coat appearance, but so do other long coat breeds. Most have great temperments and are curious, lively, and enjoy extra attention. They're suitable in all enviroments, house, apartment, city,or country. This breed range from three to seven lbs,and are seven to twelve inches in height. This breed orginated in Germany, and expected life span is 12-16 years. They're in the Toy group.

As with any dog you can get good natured and not so good, a lot depends on their handling / handlers. They do however require quite a bit of grooming. Why not have a look around your local rescue centre or shelter and see if you can find your new buddy there? You will also get a bit of history on the dog so will know more about it's nature.

I've been looking into Pomeranians too, and am concerned about how they'd get along with my cats. Check out the American Pomeranian Club...good information and you could probably make some contacts with owners and breeders.

My boss has one and regularly brings it in to the office. He is really good natured (the dog, not the boss!) and very friendly, a very fussy eater and hates to be left alone even for a short while. The boss wife apparantly has trouble keeping the tear ducts clean but apart from that finds it easy to bath and groom him.

Poms are usually extremly hyper yip yaps. They also require quite a bit of maintenance, lots of daily brushing, and probabaly $50 a month for grooming, if you dont they matt up and it's actually harmful and irritating to thier skin.
Hyper + upkeep = decidely not for everyone.
prettymuch all small dogs, excepting chihuahua, are the same...if they have lots of hair you are looking at $$$ for care and Grooming every month.

with all the pomeranians I have enoucouted (about 6), they have all been quite nasty to other people, unless it's their family. That doesnt mean that there aren't good natured pomeranians out there, I'm just sharing my expirence with the breed.
