My answer:
By blocking (delaying) stem cell research they are preventing finding a cure for many, many diseases that cause untold numbers of humans to suffer. Their only reasoning for this is a belief that a tiny ball of 150 or so undifferentiated cells has a “soul”. (It should be noted that the brain of a fly as around 10,000 cells.) Unfortunately it can’t be established that even souls exist so these so called souls are more or less wishful fantasies on the part of the religious. This is sad bordering on criminal.

So your asumptions are:
1. All conservative Christians are against stem cell research
2. All those who are in disagreement with your opinion about stem cell research are detrimental to civilization.

I assume you have really studied up both subjects to make such a strong statement. You haven't just read a few headlines and a few blogs, you have done research on what conservative christians believe.
Also, you have done a lot of research on the advantages and disadvantages of stem cell research. On the necessity, versus using the blood cells in the umbilical cord, for example? And on the possibilities that stem cell research could lead to abortions for that purpose?
Personally, I have not done all that research, so I had better leave the field to you.
But if you have not done your homework, perhaps it would be a good idea to add a comment to that effect with your question, just out of honesty.

As to the actual question, I believe the Conservative Christian church has historically been involved in promoting democracy (American democracy was copied to a great extent from the conservative Presbyterian system, I believe, along with a lot of influence from conservative congregationsl church systems, including Baptists).
Many of the world's greatest scientific discoveries - at least the most useful ones, were contributions of conservative Christians. Would you say Pascal was detrimental to civilization? He explained to the world the principle of germs, infection, contagion, etc. among other things. I have heard of a number of other big names, but not having a very good memory aI'll leave you to find them! :)
I am certainly not claiming that conservative Christians have a monopoly on great discoveries. Far from it. Some atheists have made great contributions, so have many muslims (especially during the dark ages of "christian" Europe).
Some conservative Christians are bigots. Some "liberals" (in the American sense of the term) are bigots. No group is free of them. But when I meet a bigoted atheist I mustn't think: "All atheists are bigots".
I'm just trying to say that sometimes in combatting bigotry, one can easily fall into the trap of another sort of bigotry.

though I know your not saying otherwise, and you are specifying to conservative christians, just remember that not all religious or spiritual people feel this way.

I have as much confidence in the existance of souls as I do in gravity, if not more. ... and I'm FOR stem cell research when done properly, proper cloning for this method is a SPECTACULAR technology that should be used and is a wonderful concept, I mean the way I see it it perfectly gets around the WHOLE "soul" problem as the embryo being aborted for the task was *NEVER* even *THEORETICALLY* going to become a viable form for a soul to inhabit...

the problem is very specific to those with the strange viewpoint that the soul attaches or is created in conception, which simply is not how it is.

so in one way I agree with you. ... but with provisions that the problems in question are very specific to a certain variety of belief.

Stop picking on the Christians. They feel the way they do because they have been told that God is a judgmental punishing Jerk. Just because they have been mislead into believing this nonsense is no reason to be making fun of them. Remember most of them were told this as little children when they were to young to be able to look at this from a logical basis and see it for the nonsense that it is.

We need to do what we can to make them realize that God loves each and every one of us or we would not be here.

You can’t help them by being nasty and making fun of what they believe in. The best we can do is try to lead them to the truth by example. If they see us responding lovingly to situations where they have been trained to attack or be defensive, hopefully they will notice and start to understand the True meaning of the message Jesus left for us.

Rather than the judgmental message their religion teaches.

We need to remember what Jesus said. Judge not, love our enemies, Turn the other cheek, and love our neighbors as our selves. Remember Christians are our neighbors too. We need to love them as Brother Jesus asks us to do.

Love and blessings Don
