My answer:
It seems that religion was important at one point. It helped early man to form cohesive societal units or tribes. However we have evolved beyond our need for religion.

Plankton are incredibly important. They are one of the first order elements in the food chain.

One of the best things I've seen associated with my religion is the nuns. Catholic nuns spend their lives in service to others. Look at the Poor Clare Sisters (like what Mother Theresa was). They live among the poor that they help.
And charities that go to help those in need. And outreach programs. THere are plenty of good things that are beneficial to civilization that the Catholic church, as well as Chrisitianity, brings.

The vast majority of them know nothing about Catholicism or the history of Christianity. The only think they know is what they heard from someone who is a non-catholic, and some of the made-up history I hear is just laughable. Consequently, they circulate the same rumors and lies that have been told for years. Most of them have no idea that over 1,500 years ago the whole Statue, Mary, and Saints complaining was resolved, and the first great Iconoclast movement ended. It was during this movement most of the early Christian Artwork, which would be priceless today and very valuable archeological finds, were destroyed by people with their exact same mindset (they think statue=graven image; exactly what they thought 1500 years ago!). They apparently ignore news stories and publications that frequently talk about archeological evidence of the early church. It wasn't long ago that drawings were uncovered depicting how baptisms were performed. It appears that early Christians stood in the water up to their waste, and the water was poured over their head with a seashell. Yet, these great minds still think that early Christians did full immersions, when no such evidence has ever been uncovered.

The conservative Christian Church continues to tell the truth about the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and it is growing---not diminishing. The largest attended churches in the world come up on the conservative side theologically.
Also, the Conservative Church serves to slow down the movement away from moral necessities and moral truth by secularism. It serves as the conscience of society and helps preserve stability in any society.
On the other hand, post-modernism (which denies moral absolutes) brings destabilization and destruction to societies. Study history and see...without a moral compass societies decay and die.
Like it or not, you need the Conservative Christian Church. And, you have not evolved anywhere beyond where the Roman Empire went. You still need God, whether you know it or not.

Stop picking on the Christians. They feel the way they do because they have been told that God is a judgmental punishing Jerk. Just because they have been mislead into believing this nonsense is no reason to be making fun of them. Remember most of them were told this as little children when they were to young to be able to look at this from a logical basis and see it for the nonsense that it is.
We need to do what we can to make them realize that God loves each and every one of us or we would not be here.
You can’t help them by being nasty and making fun of what they believe in. The best we can do is try to lead them to the truth by example. If they see us responding lovingly to situations where they have been trained to attack or be defensive, hopefully they will notice and start to understand the True meaning of the message Jesus left for us.
Rather than the judgmental message their religion teaches.
We need to remember what Jesus said. Judge not, love our enemies, Turn the other cheek, and love our neighbors as our selves. Remember Christians are our neighbors too. We need to love them as Brother Jesus asks us to do.
Love and blessings Don

From a purely secular view, Christians support many orphanages, schools, food aid, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and many other support services. All of these are supported heavily by Christian organizations.

They produce bile, intolerance and misinformation. They attack science and sexual immorality while often practising it themselves. They contribute nothing. They are the plankton of society.
