you can start gentle training very early, remember to be consistant with your commands and to praise good behaviour. Make sure everyone in the family uses the same commands, ie Sit, Down, Off, Leave etc etc. If the dog is very young then keep training sessions to a couple of minutes, even as the dog gets older keep things fresh with short sessions or go to classes which will also help improve your dogs socialisation with other dogs. Keep treats handy as rewards and have fun

Start "come" with a puppy as soon as they want toddle to you. Make it fun and coaxing.

Start "sit" at about 10 weeks

Start "down" and stand at about 12-14 weeks

Start with the leash and heel at between 12-15 weeks.

Start "stand" around 11-13 weeks - makes it much easier to groom them if they stand up and don't fidget like a good little soldier.

Shihs can be a little bit - oh, you talking to me? Are you sure you want me to do this? Couldn't we do lunch next week and discuss it?.....No ? Huh....well okay if you really want...."

With the wee ones everything is fun and happy and the a god time. Coaxing voice with lots of love and SHOW them what you want and praise and tickle and cuddle even if you have to make them sit or down. If they ignore or moreover, fight about it, , you use a cautioning warning voice

Keep sessions very short with a tiny one - 10 minutes here, 10 minutes there...

Use your voice and hands for praise - don't get caught up in the "please sit - I'll give you a cookie" syndrome. You will get tired of having to walk around smelling like a doggy deli with pockets full of treats to get your pet to listen. And, there will come a day, when the dog decides that it would rather chse the rabbit than 'come" and get a cookie. (To avoid that, you must also make them do what you ask and use that disapproving voice- no matter how cute they are.)

Again i would say the sooner the better. They can have a very stubborn nature,so early training would benefit you and the dog.You will really enjoy owing a shih tzu,we have had so much fun with ours and is so intelligent.Training should be fairly easy so long as you can overcome the stubbornness.Good luck.

You should start on the four basic commands by the time the pup is 10-12 weeks. By which I mean come, sit, stay and down.
If your local Red Cross or shelter offers puppy training classes, go! It's a good way to socialize your dog and get expert help.
I highly recommend Barbara Woodhouse's book, "Dog Training My Way" or the amplified version, called "How to Train Your Dog." Her method really works. Since ST's can be stubborn (and very intelligent!) they need to be put thru their paces daily, in 2 or three 10 to 15 min sessions per day, which can get longer as the pup gets older and has a longer attention span.
Good luck with your new friend!

A well-trained dog makes everyone happy, including his owner. Take a little time training him, and you'll never regret it; you'll always have an obedient dog by your side. Find more https://tr.im/xtop4

By their nature, dogs are pack animals with a well-defined social order. Through basic training, you need to consistently make sure your puppy understands that you are the leader, not him. So in teaching him the basic rules, you take on the role of pack leader.

To fit into the family circle, your dog must be taught to recognize his name and such commands as come, heel, lie down and sit.

they are stubborn little dogs but can be trained using patience and reward. I have one and of course she is obedient, but even though this is the case, she will still sometimes ignore me. That's the joy of independant little oriental doggies.
Start basic training such as 'sit' and 'go to bed' as soon as you get it at 8 weeks old, and enroll in some puppy training classes. Go along and check out the classes before you enrol to ensure the training trains with kindness. Some still believe in yelling and yanking dogs about on choke chains, and that blasted dog whisperer in America has been shown to inflict downright cruelty on some dogs. Patience and reward will always get better results than brute force and ignorance.

potty training starts from 8wks ( day one, when you get him)
,
If he does wet or poo, on the floor accidentaly, just clean it up thoroughly .
Never tell him off or shout at him , he will not know what you are cross about .

watch him very carefully ,
he will run around in circles , when he wants to perform,
pick him up and put him ,on a few sheets of newspaper

When he does his "jobs" on the paper, praise him and
make a big happy fuss of him .
he Will soon trot up to that newspaper, when he wants to relieve himself. be patient he is very young
I move the paper towards the back door,.after a while
so that he can eventualy ask to go outside

Taking him outside on the lead (12 weeks) "walkies !!"

in the garden to start with
. always make a great fuss of him when he performs .
And you can go a little further each day

( shih -Tzu do not require ,enourmouse amounts of excersise , but do enjoy thier regular walkies ! )
( puppy classes,
will teach you ,how he can safely be walked on the lead with you , and be obediant , so you can be in control of his safety )

Next stage ; ~~~~~~~very important,
enrol him in a good puppy classes !
for socialisation with other dogs and beginners obedience ;
.
Shih-Tzu are happy intelligent dogs !
Willing to please and oh ! so loving .

j they can be ,just a little bit will full.
need lots of love and grooming

i have three Shih-Tzu dogs (a happy family )

they are wonderful pets and companions, and i would not be without them .

Hope this helps

Before about 6 months you go to puppy training classes; after 6 months you can start formal obediance. Puppy training is about behaviour and control, for instance getting used to wearing a lead; formal training more about performing tasks such as walking to heel in a straight line.
