What kind of dog shampoo or remedy should I use on a St. Bernard to make its fur silky without causing its hot spots? ( He sometimes gets hot spots when I bath him with baby shampoo. I always blow dry him.)

I use a medicated shampoo & conditioner that I buy at the vet & only bathe my dog when he really needs it. In the summer that's about once a week but the rest of the year it's about once a month. The shampoo's formula also has flea & tick repellant in it.'

honestly, once a week is too much.. you will dry out her skin and coat doing that. She should only be bathed once a month at most.. in the winter time, she should only be bathed when dirty.. daily brushing will suffice to remove dirt and debris from the coat. I like Tomlyn's Pearls au Lait milk bath.. I cant remember if I got it at PetSmart or Petco tho.. they do have a strawberry scented one. Both of those stores have a pretty good selection of shampoos.. most pet shampoos are fine, but I'd avoid any products made by Hartz.

Again I'll start out by saying that you should not use soaps and chemicals on animals if was not made to be used on animals. Animal skin is alot more sensitive than ours. Baby shampoo actually does burn animal skin because it disturbs the pH balance of the skin, just the same as dishwashing soap makes your hands feel dry. Get a dog shampoo and conditioner from a pet store or your vet.

I take my dogs to the groomer. But they've told me not to bathe them more than once a month. Especially the long haired ones. Unless they're getting filthy all the time, bathing them more than once a month will dry out their skin, and cause hot spots.
