Because everything in the romance books is better than what they get.
They read and they believe.
Kind of like someone who watches to many movies and really believes that they can see dead people.

The Library ( as long as I can remember) has always been known as the " quiet place". A place anyone can go to read, study, etc. The librarian "whispers" in order to keep that "quiet" persona going.
As far as the obese, unattractive women complain about her sexual relations, you can find that anywhere!!!

If the librarian's are whispering, how can you hear them? You must have very good hearing.

Libraries have changed over the years. They aren't the quiet refuges they used to be. Why? The environment has changed- lots of equipment - computers mostly that make a lot of noise. The printers, the phones, the photocopy machines, patrons on cell phones, etc.

The staff should keep their conversations to a quiet level. They probably shouldn't be talking about their personal lives so openly. However, they are allowed to talk. That's part of their job.

If you are disturbed about their conversation- that is getting too personal and you don't want to overhear them, ask to speak to the head of the dept. Tell her/him what you are hearing and ask him/her to speak to the staff. Perhaps the ladies don't know how loud they are.

Try not to be so judgmental about them when you speak to the dept. head. It's not polite to call people names. If you want some results, be polite and diplomatic.

I'm actually a Librarian, and I'm not obese nor unattractive. AND I complain about the lack of intimacy in my life.

I'm sure if you were an obese unattractive librarian you'd also be complaining about the lack of sex in your life. shame man instead of complaining chat to them and give them handy tips as to how they might improve themselves!

Lol at the first answer, that was kind of bold. But anyways it's obvious at why LIBRARIans whisper. Why are you so concerned about it anyway? As long as they're not talking about you you should worry about it..

They just don't follow the silence rule, which they are suppose to enforce in the library.

Well it is a library after all. If you don't want to hear people talk then move to a quieter location. Also, please don't eavesdrop on anyone's conversations.
