Hello my dog is pawing at his ear constantly and shaking his head. Last night it was on and on but when he's distracted he's fine and when he's sitting down still it seems to be painful. Before i go the doctor route does anyone know of any natural remedies or ideas.

Did you have a look in it's ear to see? It might be "ear mites" driving it nuts! when really bad can be painful. Have a look in your dogs ear,if you notice a bunch of brown gunk, thats ear mite poop! ewwwy, you can just use some Tea Tree Oil and a Q-tip to remove the build up and the tea tree will stop the ear mites,if it's not ear mites, then you will have to go the the vet.

Your dog seems to have a nasty case of earmites and you need to get rid of them fast, before the inside of the ear gets infected. The vet will give you some excellent drops that you will put in his ears once or twice a day. Do not try to mess with ears with anything else.
some people think it might be ok to use olive oil in the ears, but don't do that. Get the proper t reatment from the v et, and your pooch will be just fine.

Truthfully, I would not mess with the ears. Are his ears dirty? That is a sign of infection. You would notice black in them. Gently clean that out with an oil and tissue. You could try an over the counter ear/eye drop that comes in a blue bottle but I would not recommend it. He could have ear mites, yeast infection or fleas and in any event can you imagine how painful it is for him? Please take him to a vet.

It could just be ear mites, which are itchy and very uncomfortable and make their ears droopy. But in the event it is an infection, you will need antibiotics. Best bet is to pay the 30ish dollars for a vet visit and get the right stuff.

you should take him to the vet anyway. if your pup gets ear infections quite a bit, you can ask for an ear cleaning solution. Have them teach you how to clean his ears.

My sheepie would get them all the time and every few weeks we would have to trim his ear hair and clean his ears.

He NEEDS to be taken to the doctor. What if its something that isnt an ear infection? Is it worth risking your dog's health? I didn't think so.

it could be ear wax, gently wash ears with warm water on cotton wool, but he will probally need ear drops too,

Have you looked inside his ear to see if he's got a tick in there?
