I'll be meeting my puppy for the first time - she's 3 weeks old - and still with her litter. Is there a certain protocol I should follow?

Thanks for the heads up - I had no idea about the germs/handling issues. I really appreciate it.
Are there suggestions for when (how soon) it would be okay to meet them?

The puppy was the only Yellow Lab in the litter, so that's the one I'm taking...

I would never allow any strangers near my puppies at this age - much too dangerous. But since they're allowing you, you need to stay away from all dogs before you go. Don't expect to be allowed to handle a puppy this young - this is going to cause a lot of unnecessary stress to the mother. At 3 weeks of age there's not one thing you can tell about the puppy's temperament or conformation, so all you can do is look at the litter, meet the mother and see how healthy they look.

Take a shower, put on clean clothes, and what ever you do, DO NOT go near any other dogs before going there. Now that you have picked the litter you wish to have a puppy from, the last thing you would want to do is cause them to get sick or die.

Don't handle the puppy's, allow the litter owner to pick them up and hand you one if THEY want to.

I'm a bit suprised, I will not allow ANYONE on the property when I have a three week old litter.

Just do what the breeder tells you to do. I am sure she will not want you to hold the pup very long. Maybe long enough to take a couple of pictures so take your camera. Don't try to pet the mom, she may bite you. If she comes over and sits in your lap, it is probably okay to pet her. Get to know the breeder. Ask her whatever questions that you may have about taking care of the pup. Ask about what to feed it, when to feed it, how to potty train it, etc. Make a list of questions before you go. Ask if the pups are seen by the vet and have shots started before you take it home. Ask if there is a health guarantee. Congratualtions on your new baby. What kind is she?

They change A LOT from 3- 6 or 8 weeks. Its far to early to judge appearance, temperment... At 3 weeks your pup will be little more than a wobbly poop and eatting machine... but cute as a button no doubt. So just enjoy the babies!

Wow, that's so exciting for you! Have you been in touch with this breeder before?

Normally this is the time to check their surroundings and see how social she is with the rest of the litter. Try involving her in a little gentle play and ask the breeder about her behavior and berth.

Enjoy!
