Because they believe their cats are SPECIALER! My Dixie (Maine Coon) is just as beautiful as any show cat but I don't love alley cat Shasta any less for not being as pretty. And all my cats can out-mouse those prissy show cats!

People that show animals are generally weird, period. Don't take offense, but if you had to sit in a hall with cats in cages with people asking the same questions all day & wanting to let their darling children 'pet the kitty' (which they just spent hours grooming to get perfect for the show ring & petting can also transfer diseases), you would get a bit stand-offish, too! Same for dog shows. Yes, they are cliquey & sometimes short with oustiders, but - so are people in a lot of other hobbies when they are at one of their judged events. Only in this one, they are dealing with live animals with temperments that can be flustered & effect their behavior in the ring. Realize show days are very nerve-racking. The end result is: they really DO care about their breed & are showing to prove they have good specimens to pass on good genes to pups & kittens you may own one day. Remember that.
If you are really interested in learning more about their breed or getting a cat or dog from a particular breeder, ask for their card or phone number AFTER they are out of the ring - not while they are getting ready or waiting ringside to show, please. They do not have much time as they may have another cat or dog to show next. When you visit at their home, things will be much more relaxed & conducive to conversation.

Because they don't see their cats as pets, to them it is a money maker. If you really pay attention to how it works, when the cat or dog for that matter can no longer show, most of them don't keep them. And if it can't breed any longer, then it is pointless to them. I know a few people who do show dogs, and most of them act as though these dogs are nothing more than lining in the wallet. One of my close friends shows Akita's and she has been asked to go to some of the bigger shows, but she wont because she actually believes that her dog is her pet, and when she tells these people that she takes her dog outside and plays fetch or that they take the dog out on the boat and swim with it in the ocean, they look at her as though she has lost her mind.
In my mind, these people are animal likers, not animal lovers.

An observation with truth behind it. Us ordinary folks appreciate the companionship cats offer without the silly rules money adds to it; Cat Show people are only wrapped up in what their money can do to make their cats LOOK like they are the best.

I find that "show people" are a bit snooty in general. It doesn't matter if you go to a cat show or a car show. Those who's lives revolve around a particular interest tend to have elitist attitudes.
My cats are members of my family. I would never dream of parading my children around for people to judge and critique.

It happens, people are weird. I see where you are coming from though, a lot of people let the show get to their head. They win once and all hell breaks loose. Their cat is no longer a pet, it is PROPERTY...big difference.
Its like people who enter their kids in pageants, and it all goes to their heads...weird-os.

A friend of mine use to breed Bombays and show them and got out of it because of the cattiness of those involved. They all think they are better than everyone else.
