I'm in DC for this semester (fall06) and I was wondering what else I should do before heading back home (to texas) in December.

I've already done/been to: monuments/memorials, natural history museum, freer/sackler museums, hirshhorn museum, national gallery of art, national zoo, chinatown, adams morgan, dupont circle.

So I'm wondering what is there to do for Halloween, to see the fall foliage (like a hike/walk somewhere?), for thanksgiving weekend.

What about these things?
Air/Space Museum
Capitol/Library of congress guided tours
alexandria
archives
the other smithsonian museums?

Georgetown for halloween or to the Cinima & Draft House in Bethesda. Call the radio station DC101. They can give you a whole list of things.

To see the fall foliage go to Skylinedrive. Or 7 Falls virginia side for a good hike.

Hike: Great Falls- Maryland Side you get there from the Beltway. If you are metro bound then the path up the C&O cannal from Georgetown or south to Alexandria is a great walk and even better path for a bike.

Roosevelt Island is a good short hike around wihtout really leaving the city.

Smithsonians: Check out the two buildings behind the Castle - African Art & Asain Art- most of the musem structure is underground and the buildings are as neat as the exhibits.

The Holocaust Musem is tremendous but also pretty depressing. Lot to see, lot to take in.

If you go to Alexandria check out the Torpedo Factory.

Last, the most beautiful building in the city (I think) is the National Cathedal. When the weather cooperates, the Bishop's garden is a great place to read a book.

Have fun.

I know you have already been to the zoo but do try to catch Boo At The Zoo, the Zoo's annual Halloween celebration. Also take a cab or a bus to Fletcher's Boat House on Canal Road, just outside of Georgetown (you could walk from Roslyn metro but it is a long haul) and rent a bicycle to ride up the Canal towpath, or rent a canoe or paddleboat and boat up the Canal. It's a great way to check out the fall colors. The canal runs parallel to the Potomac River and in most places you can get a decent view of the river from the bike path.

Have you really seen DC by going only to NW and the hill? Take a ride on the green line towards Anacostia.

The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site is a 10 minute walk from the Anacostia metro station. It's a well spent afternoon especially if you talk and listen to residents of the other side of DC as you walk.

The Air and Space Museum should have been the first one you went to. Do it and all of the rest. For Halloween go to Georgetown. Get or rent a bike and ride down the bike trail past NAtional Airport, and you can go all the way to Mt Vernon on it. Or ride up the C&O Canal bike path. I think you may be able to rent a bike in Goergetown near the river.
