i think it's b.s. and here's why- we are all looking for "fulfillment" but will never find it. seriously. it sounds grim, but it's true.
ask people if they ever feel lonely. everyone will say yes and then some people will say that when they feel lonely they think of their family or jesus or their dog or whatever until they feel "fulfilled" actually, they just get distracted from feeling lonely.the loneliness never leaves- it's the "void" we all have.
that lonliness becomes problematic when we can't accept it or can't find ways to distract ourselves from it and then it consumes us. in fact, those people who write self -help books have good advice, but they write books to make them feel like they are filling their "void" by helping people and making money, but it's just a distraction for them.
i'm on Y! a right now cuz i'm lonely. how 'bout you?

Just a lot of Barbara Streisand to sell books. You hit the nail on the head. To be "fulfilled" means different things to different people. There were times in my life where if I had something to eat I was fulfilled. To not feel hunger is the greatest feeling in the world. Same thing with the absence of pain, or fear, or loneliness. If a junkie kicks the addiction and just goes back to a normal life, that is fulfillment. What the self-help preachers are pushing is a fantasy, a dream, an unattainable goal. To me it is is enough to be conntent, not hate anybody and not have anybody hate me, good wine, my books, a walk in the desert after a spring rain, a smile from a beautiful woman, to observe a wasp building her nest, Mozart's 23rd Piano Concerto, and a topless massage. (I threw that last one in there 'cause I was starting to sound schmaltzy... :) But you know what I mean. Just be yourself and be satisfied.

it's a load of b.s. everyone's sense of fullfillment is different so if you plan on finding your's in a book targeted for the mainstream your probably reaching for someone else's goals. find your own sense of happiness and do it everyday. use those books to build a fire and roast marshmellows with you kids, that makes me happy.

You will surely get to that sometime.
I personaly don't think that one book or another will help.
Of course, the books can guide you, but the answer is in you. Just think. Books are written by people. People who found their way. But the way is always different. What can be good for someone can hurt another.
Do you want to know what was it for me? Some words.
They came from a man. It sounded like "You need help. But i don't think a specialized person can help you. You have to learn by yourself how to let people love you"

I think when it comes down to it you need to just find out what makes you happy and go for it. When you reach that goal you might be "fullfilled" or maybe you will have a new goal/ dream to reach...

we can expect to feel fullfilled by ourselves but these can do no in motivating us when we are feeling a bit done but basically they are waste of money when they are constantly being churned out each year
