The word SIN was used in archery contests. It means to
"miss the mark".
Sin to me, is when someone "knows" they're doing wrong, and they do it anyway.
ARROGANCE is a funny thing. It's when one KNOWS they are wrong, but do it anyway. But kind of BLOCK IT OUT that they know they do wrong. PARADOX!

Sin is anything that is not in harmony with God's personality, standards, ways and will, all of which are holy. It may involve wrong conduct, unclean thoughts, failure to not do what should be done, ungodly speech, or selfish motives and desires. The Bible shows there is a difference between the sin we inherited from our first parents and an act of sin over which a person is repentant and the practice of sin.

I look at sin as anything that takes you away (distracts you) from knowing God. I also think it is anything contrary to the way God intended us to be. God wants us to take care of one another and the world that we live in. We too often choose to do things for ourselves instead.

From what I've read and been taught, sin has a cumulative effect. No one sin would entirely take you away from God. All sin is therefore, equal. You can't make up for it with good deeds. You're only forgiven through grace given by God through Jesus Christ.

Great question about an often misunderstood concept.

Sin is breaking the laws of the 10 Commandments. These were given as a guide to show us humans how to live a good and happy life. So therefore, sin is not living by those laws, which Christ summed up into 2 Commandments, "love God, and Love your neighbor as yourself" ..If we obeyed these laws, we wouldn't be sinning, as everything is covered in these commandments.
So it would be useless for me to say, sin is stealing, or adultry, or killing or molesting or........etc...
Sin is just a matter of going against what you know is right, against your conscience, against the Holy Spirit. If we do something terrible, but we do not know it is terrible, we have not sinned..Sin comes thru knowing what we shouldn't do, BUT we do it anyway!

Breaking the Laws of Yahweh

1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

In a christian sense I believe the old testament shows us morals to live by but with Jesus we now live under grace which blurs the lines of right and wrong. Every one knows when they do something wrong and for that person it is sin. For example if I kill some one I know it is wrong and this is sin. If I eat bacon (which you should not do under the law in the old testament) I don't believe it to be a sin. But for some people if they believe eating bacon is wrong then to them it is a sin. That's my explanation of sin.

Wealth without work, Pleasure without conscience, Knowledge without character, Commerce without morality, Science without humanity, Worship without sacrifice, Politics without principles.

These are the words of Mahatma Gandhi and I think the above words can be used to define as the sin as it has more significance in our present world.

I think sin can be defined two ways.
1) Doing something that you believe to be wrong by moral or virtue.(Such as stealing due to peer pressure)
2) Doing something that has been deemed wrong by cultural or society standards. (In the U.S. Cannibalism is considered very very wrong, in some tribes in Africa it is considered spiritual and an honor to consume the flesh of departed relatives.)
