Let's say you're in a crowded elevator and everyone hears you do it, what do you do? And if it's silent, should just act like you don't notice?

I'm going to assume that, because you asked this in the "etiquette" category, you want a serious answer. As hysterical as this particular body function is (I can't contain my laughter when this happens to ANYONE, even myself), the "proper" thing to do is immediately apologize....whether it's audible or silent. Believe me, the person nearest you will know it was you even if they can't hear it! There's no need for you to shout your apology, a softly spoken "Oh, my....Please excuse me!" is enough.

If it makes noise then I would hold my stomach like I was in pain and play on their sympathy, while apologizing. If it was silent and it was more than one other person in their with me I would act like it wasn't me and I could not smell it.

eat more beans with onions and wash it down with a beer, to be followed with a dozen hard boiled eggs 1/2 hour later. then go to the mall with your camel. when I pass it I always blame it on you.

If everyone hears it, you say, "Sorry! Shouldn't have eaten those beans yesterday!"
If its silent and nobody notices don't do anything. THEN they will notice.

If it was not audible, you can go on your merry way and pretend nothing happened.
However, if it was audible, you have two options:
1) Politely say excuse me, and move on to the next topic.
OR
2) Point to the person next to you
