Did anyone see this report on the Today show? Many parents start feeding their kids bad foods very early in life that over the years is damaging their young bodies thus leading to diabetes and heart problems. What are the culprits in your fridge? Some of the items listed to avoid are:

Whole milk and 2% milk (loaded with bad fat)
Yogurt with fruit (loaded with sugar)
White bread (no fiber)
Regular applesauce (loaded with sugar)
Drinks like Hi-C, Gatorade, soda (loaded with sugar)

The woman on the show stated that you might as well be eating candy.

You won't find any of that in our house. We limit sugar intake. I read labels and make sure that sugar is not high on the ingredient list. We avoid high fructose corn syrup. We limit foods that contain colorings, msg, nitrates. We totally avoid anything with hydrogenated oils (trans fat). I work as a healthy foods consultant for busy moms and I practice what I preach.

Edited to add: you can still give your kids yogurt. Pick healthier choices. We use organic or all natural vanilla and I add fruit to it myself. For a treat I *sometimes* add chocolate syrup to the vanilla yogurt. As for applesauce, if you want you can make your own. It is really easy. But you can also buy all natural brands of applesauce that have nothing at all added to it. Drink low fat milk or change to soy or even rice. They are fortified with the nutrients needed. Drink 100% fruit juices AND encourage kids to drink water. My kids are only allowed juice or milk if they are having a meal or snack. Otherwise they must drink water. White bread? I have no idea why anyone eats that stuff. It is all sugar, no fiber and no other nutrients. It is mostly just additives. There are some great brands of 100% whole wheat bread. Make sure it says 100% whole wheat, otherwise you're eating wheat bread no better than white bread.

It is easy to switch to the healthier alternatives.

I definitely believe that many children these days won't live as long as they should. With our hectic American lifestyles, parents often don't have the time to cook nutritious meals from scratch. It's easy to buy cheap, tasty fast food for the kids- it's satisfying and tastes great. However, it's basically like poisoning their bodies when they eat it. Also, kids drink way too much soda, which is obviously nothing but sugar. When it comes down to it, parents need to try and "hook" their kids on healthy food from the start. Teach them that it tastes good and is good for them. I try to keep soda, juices with way too much sugar, and fattening things out of my fridge and pantry. However, I LOVE all those things, so it's very difficult! I just don't allow myself to buy them at the grocery, unless it's a special treat. Once I have kids, I hope I can teach them the right attitude about nutrition. Variety is imprtant- they need to eat some of everything. And vitamins are good too.

Yeah, I was watching it too. It is funny that some people are just now realizing this. My fridge is pretty much a safe zone.. except the cookie dough.

Disney will be good and has sections to cater to all age groups. And you can still get a stiff drink there when you need it! Good Luck and I do not envy you!

I don't think it's wise to deny your child a glass of milk.
