The origin of this quote comes from an English and American proverb that says "A cat has nine lives. For 3 he plays, for 3 he strays and for the last 3 he stays." This proverb has almost been forgotten with time and I suspect most people just believe this now for cats amazing ability to land on their feet from high places (most of the time - although not always uninjured). This saying may be associated as well with some of the associations people have with cats being an evil animal. Cats have often been associated with witchcraft - and many people probably thought that cats were brought to life. But no...the saying is not true. Cats only have one life, and its up to us to help make sure it’s a long and healthy one!

In some cultures, the number 9 is thought to be lucky because it's the trinity of the trinity (3x3+9). In other cultures, 9 means nothing and 7 is lucky....so in some cultures, cats have 7 lives instead of 9. The saying came about because cats have such an uncanny ability to get out of tight situations. Some things that would kill other animals, cats somehow make it through....so people just started the whole "they have more than one life" thing.

I'm not sure about the actual number origination, but I'm sure it's because cats can seem to survive SO much without being obviously affected by it. I'm sure if you watch TV at all you've seen the videos where cats defy rescue and jump from ridiculous heights and just run away.
No, they don't REALLY have nine lives, silly. :) They're just really lucky really often. But if you're irresponsible enough to let your kitty live outside, and he doesn't come home one day, chances are that his luck ran out.
Please remember that although cats are independent to an extent, they CAN'T defend themselves from most of the dangers of the outside world (cars, dogs, children with sticks...). Indoor cats average a lifespan nearly three times longer than that of cats left outside, even part-time.

Cats seem to survive a lot of things that other animals wouldn't survive because of their flexible spine. (They also always land on their feet).

People will probably tell you that cats do, in fact, have nine lives because people are stupid.
