Simple, you explain that you asking was out of respect, and if they can't respect the fact that the two of you have a future together then you are deeply hurt and can only hope they will change ther minds- Then say you're leaving the decision up to their daughter.
That way you appease them, work on changing their views nd keep yourself from being too hated. But very few parents would say no though!
Good luck if you're about to ask.

If you are both of legal age, then the two of you do what's best for you...the parents don't have to consent or approve, it's just traditionally appropriate to request their "blessing"...

There's no reason to not marry just because her parents don't dig the idea...just be aware that you will likely have in-law issues down the road unless you can win them over...

Perhaps you should find out why they don't approve, and see if you can allay their fears or address those issues to their satisfaction...

Of course in the olden days if they said no, then you couldn't marry the girl....but I suppose, its all down to the two of you now. Will the girl marry you even though the parents disapprove?? Will it be awkward for the rest of your lives if you don't get along?

All questions that need to be taken into consideration before you sort anything. And of course if they disapprove I suppose you'll be paying for your own wedding!!

This is respectful and very old fashion but sweet. Today it is mostly done just for that reason, respect. Most guys do not even bother and the majority of today's parents do not expect it. Unless you have done something evil I wouldn't worry about it.

My husband didn't ask my dad - we just flew to Vegas and got married. My dad wasn't pleased, but what could he do about it??? It's not like he helped to pay for it or was that nice before the marriage anyway. Do what feels right for you!!! If they say no and your girl says YES - go get married - her opinion counts more!!!!

You smile politely and withdraw.

You regroup the next day and advise them (together) that you will both wed, whether or not they give their blessing
