That is a big question, you will need to do some more research than just here. Christianity is made up of people who follow the teaching of Jesus Christ who lived 2,000 years ago. His teachings are found in the Bible. Christianity teaches that Jesus is God who allowed Himself to be born to a virgin (Mary) to take on human form so that He could save people from their sins. Sins are disobiedence to God. Jesus did this by paying the penalty for our sins which was eternal death. He died by a form of torture and execution called crucifixition. Three days after He died, He rose from the dead and later ascended to heaven, with the promise that He would return one day and take all those who believed in Him to a place called heaven for eternity. Jesus left the message with this world that the way to Heaven was to believe in Him. From this man who had 12 disciples, who spread this message throughout the whole world at that time, has come thousands of different religions and denominations. Somewhere within all these different groups is a group of true believers who make up the true church of Jesus Christ.
I hope this helps a little as an outline, but I am sure you can see that you would need to do much more study than what I can give you.

History: burned the library at Alexandria and brought over 1000 years of forced stupidity = The Dark Ages. If they hadn't destroyed the collected knowledge of the ancient world, Columbus would have been going to the moon.
Leaders: men who were afraid of people asking questions and daring to challenge their self-created "authority". It was how Constantine was able to pay for his war, by forcing everyone to become Christian and pay 10% of their earnings on top of their taxes.
Practices: torture, murder, and theft on a scale which makes the Nazis look like amatures. Can you say "Spanish inquisition" or "Crusade"?
Beliefs: "Everyone is going to burn in hell but me." "As long as I pitch some money into a plate once a week, I'm assured a place in heaven."
Religeon it came from: Jewish Mysticism - but few of them know that about their own religeon and most will deny it because they have been brainwashed into not doing any research. Instead, they read a book that has over 300 different versions but, somehow, they are all The Truth.
Population today: estimates range from 400 million to 2.5 billion world-wide. Too many, either way.
Things you should know: If someone tells you that they are a "good Christian" you need to know exactly where your money is because you are about to get screwed. Their "moral code" only extends as far as they want it to at that moment. If they gain profit from your suffering then they just have to give 10% of it on Sunday and everything is hunky-dory.

Get yourself a bible - the NIV (new international version) is a good one and start with the Gospel book of John. That is an important book and will explain much about who the Christ was and what he did during his ministry and who Christians are. There are thousands of various denominations of Christianity - Catholic, Lutheran, Orthodox, Protestant (Baptist, Methodist, etc.) and some who claim to be Christian, but are false teachers. God bless you. ~Nise~

If I knew nothing about religion I would go to an Encyclopedia to discover who started that denomination and when.
The largest and oldest Christian denomination is the Roman Catholics. I think this is due to divine providence.
God has always remained faithful to His followers. This fact is no less self-evident today as it has been for thousands of years. Catholics are 62% of Christianity or 1/6th of the world population. All the protestant denominations lumped together are a mere 20% of Christ’s followers. 3
The apostle Paul writes, “And every day the Lord added to their group those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:47) When the Sanhedrin were contemplating what to do with the apostles Gamaliel gave sound advice: If what they have planned and done is of human origin, it will disappear, but if it comes from God, you cannot possibly defeat them. You could find yourselves fighting against God! (Acts 5:38-39) Roman Catholicism not only is the dominant religion of the world; scripture also assures that Christ’s Church will not become (dogmatically) corrupt (Ephesians 5:27 & Mt 16:17-19).
Christians beware! Jesus himself said, Not everyone who calls me Lord, Lord will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but only those who do what my father in heaven wants them to do. When the judgment day comes, many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord! In your name we spoke God's message, by your name we drove out many demons and performed many miracles!’ Then I will say to them, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me you wicked people!’ Mt 7:21-23
Satan uses Scripture too!
The question, “What came first the chicken or the egg?” can be applied to trusting an interpretation of Scripture or the Church of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ established his Church in the first century while the Bible was not completed until the fourth century. It is self-evident that the Church came before the Bible and that divine authority had been given to the apostles by Jesus Christ to guide the flock. It is clear that people pervert the gospel.
It is also non-sense to think there can be multiple valid interpretations of scripture when scripture clearly says there is “one faith”. (Ga 4:5) Satan tempted Jesus Christ himself by using Scripture. St. Paul said, "I am surprised at you! In no time at all you are deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ, and are accepting another Gospel. Actually, there is no "other Gospel," but I say this because there are some people who are upsetting you and trying to change the Gospel of Christ." (Ga 1:6-8)
Following the authority of the Church that Christ instituted should be trusted since Christ Himself said, “the gates of Hell will not prevail against it.” (Mt. 16:18) The reasoning of Protestantism is not logical or reasonable:
Protestantism naturally begets toleration of error. Rejecting the principle of authority in religion, it has neither criterion nor definition of faith. On the principle that every individual or sect may interpret the deposit of Revelation according to the dictates of private judgment, it gives birth to endless differences and contradictions. Impelled by the law of its own impotence, through lack of any decisive voice of authority in matters of faith, it is forced to recognize as valid and orthodox any belief that springs from the exercise of private judgment. Therefore does it finally arrive, by force of its own premises, at the conclusion that one creed is as good as another; it then seeks to shelter its inconsistency under the false plea of liberty of conscience. (Liberalism Is A Sin 8)
The word “Protestant” is derived from the word “protest” and in which case these people are protesting Christ’s Church. “Religious beliefs or unbelief’s have come to be mere matters of opinion.”
