This could be when the root of the nail has been damaged before the damaged part of the nail can be seen. This white mark will also slide along as the nail grows as you have discovered.
If you notice white spots on your nails, they are not caused by a vitamin or mineral deficiency. In a few cases, white spots on fingernails can indicate an underlying infection, but much more commonly, they are the result of minor injury. Similar to bruising, white spots on fingernails do not show up immediately. It may take several days or weeks before you notice the spots.
If you are really concerned about the spots, and they continually appear, may I suggest you see your Doctor as he will be able to diagnose the true reason and put your mind to rest.

Usually notes a zinc deficiency and shows that you do not eat a proper diet. Follow the food pyramid exactly ot take a daily multi-vitamin. My nails grow up to 1/4 inch a week and my diet is awful but I do take my vitamins every day.

I've heard that it was damage to your nail bed before your nail grew out...ie: you stubbed or 'banged' you finger on something. I have also heard that they are calcium deposits. Either way they do not bother me enough to worry which of the two it is. :)

I don't exactly know what the structure of the white dot is, but it shows up because of lack of calcium.
You can increase the amount of calcium in your diet by eating more cheese, drinking more milk and generally consuming milk products.

well... its nothin big really.... it jus points out some mineral or calcium deficiency.... a slight imbalance in diet due to stress or work load can result in such stuff... if its extreme, den the skin around the nail starts to peel too... jus try makin a healthy diet, with apples and milk regularly....
