Windows has a built-in file renaming system. It is very limited, however. If you select a group of files, right click, choose "Rename" and type a new name all files will be renamed to mimic that file name with an added "(#) " to the end.
Ex:
photo144.jpg photo830.jpg; photo487.jpg; etc
-> could be renamed to:
Park (1).jpg; Park (2).jpg; Park (3).jpg; etc

Brother you need no other software when you can do this in Windows XP! Just select the groups of files you wanna rename. Then right-click on one of them and select rename. After renaming it all the files name change into new one combined with a number.

It depends on how you want to rename your files. If you want to do something like rename all "FilesX.txt" to "MyFilesX.txt" (where 'X' is a number, for example), you can do it in DOS with the command "rename Files*.txt MyFiles*.txt" where '*' is the part that changes from files to files.

We need more details.
